so I received my chips today and installed them both but my issue persists.

My RAM simply wont pass memtest when in dual channel mode (xmp profile). 2133 - 9 - 11- 11- 31 - 2N 1.6v. (Gskill Trident X 2x8GB).

Could it be that Im missing something? or that its my IMC is just crap on this 3770K?

Any advice would be good.

EDIT: so Ive done so further testing.

With a single module installed in A2, xmp profile, or manual settings - passes memtest, everything reported correctly.

Move the same module to B2, xmp or manual - fails memtest - timings reported as 6-6-6-20.. ***!
Everything in the BIOS is correct.

Think I got a dud board...

Few questions

Are your overclocked or running stock CPU speeds?

Can you pass memtest at optimized defaults? memory will likely be running at 1333MHz

Which Dimm slots are you using Yellow or Black?

Not likely the mobo IMHO what bios are you using?

Have you tried setting Mem Freq, Timings and mem voltage manually vs XMP mode?

Have you tried boosting VTT memory voltage for the procs IMC? There are several voltages in bios that may help compensate for a weak IMC which I believe may be part of your issue.

Based on what I know now I'd be inclined to RMA the proc. Intel is very good about this I would simply state the proc will not run your memory at rated specs stable and ask for replacement should not be an issue no matter the rated speed.

No.

I have been speaking with ASRock support via email as mentioned earlier. They have been very good about it. In the last email the suggested I adjust the tCWL to 8 (default of 7).
8 still gave errors, 9 froze the machine during memtest, 10 worked fine.

If there is something else I should have done Id like to know. The reason I keep pressing about wierd issues is I cant help but feel something is up that shouldnt be. (never had such strange issues with any of the previous machines Ive built).

even with the above, CPUZ is still showing wrong JDEC information about the RAM chips. If you think I should RMA the cpu still I will go down that path (never RMA'd a cpu before).

I'm new to this board so knowing it's nuances is not what it should be however. I've been bench testing this board with two different 3770k neither had an issue running memory at 2400 up to 4.8 oc. That said they are 4GB sticks and yours are 8GB sticks which are known to be a bit more stressful on a weak IMC. Still I see no reason why they should not be able to run at there rated spec. but Intel claims the Ivy is rated for 1333/1600 memory and anything over that is considered overclocking and we all know over clocking is not guaranteed. This is why we see mobos default to 1333. It's hard for me to say definitively a new proc would solve your troubles but you may want to try a different pair of mem to see if compatibility is the cause. GL and let us know how it goes

Hi,

Its not the processor. I have been in contact with ASRock over the last month troubleshooting. (Im really impressed with their support btw).
They have obtained the exact same model RAM from GSkill and see the exact same issue on their end. They have just sent me (in the last couple hours) a new BIOS to try. (2.20A).

I have it flashed and testing... Dont know end result as yet. (memtest is running atm)

Prior to this we got everything working fine by changing the tCWL to 10 (default 7).
At 7, I got errors in memtest. 8 also gave errors, 9 hard froze and 10 was clean.

Again, very impressed with ASRock support!

Just registered to the forum, so far I've only been lurking on this thread to try and steal some OC advice. Now I have some specific problems I didn't find mentioned on this thread.

Got my formula installed last week and so far I'm trying to tweak some stuff on stock clock (well, formula's default Nick Shih profile, let's call it stock smile.gif). Few questions and problems came up.

1. My temps are rather high for stock clock. I'm aware the OOB setup pushes turbo to constant 3.9, but I shouldn't have 65C in a 23C room in Prime95, not even on air (Hyper 412Slim with high airflow fan).

2. Closely related to above. Why are my stock (OOB) settings pushing VCORE to 1.280 sometimes (rarely, but close to 1.250 under load all the time)? Everything on auto. Turning power saving on did not decrease the voltages by 0.1 as advertised, more like 0.03. Even idle voltage is around 1.15.
I changed from auto to offset on cpu voltage and had to push down to -0.150 to get decent voltages and a bit tamer temps (I'm aware those temps are not even uncomfortable, but I'm worried about my future OC headroom).
Is the automatic turbo overvoltage that is the problem? Should I go manual on it?
My goal is to get a 100% stable stock (with the multicore enhancement to have 3.9 under load) with as low voltage/temp possible and speedstep on (I think that's the feature that dials down clock and volts when idle). What is the voltage I could expect for max load? Now I get 1.144 with my -0.150 offset (in prime, although aida64 managed to catch a 1.190 peak when gaming for some reason). Didn't have time to do full 8 hours of prime, but I've been gaming and running 15-20min Prime without a hitch so far with the negative offset I selected.

3. Fan-tastic tuning is not nearly as fan-tastic as advertised. First off, it doesn't slow down fans on boot even though I told it to (everything is full on in BIOS) – I have to open it and hit “Apply” for it to start controlling speeds. Secondly, once I started tweaking some fan tests took over an hour and then some of them reported lower spin speed on 100% than on 90 with some even reporting some weird numbers on lower settings (example: one fan reported 6000RPM on 40% while it is a 700RPM case fan). And thirdly, once I finally set up the curves for some fans (and a flat 100% for others) the MOS fan stopped completely and one of the fans I gave the always full profile started spinning at 20%. What?
EDIT: It also doesn't even display the MOBO Fan. It shows fine on the sensor tab, but not in the tuning one.

Any advice is greatly appreciated!

And I'll most likely ask more once I decide to actually OC the damn thing smile.gif

Oh yeah, before OS installation I did the BIOS internet flash and have 2.0 now. So my Q #4: Where does it say which version you have? Couldn't find it on any of the UEFI screens.

My CPU is Malay (if it actually means anything).

And I have to add a word of praise after complaining so much: My mem sticks are supposed to be CR2. The (only) XMP profile I got in BIOS put it to CR1. And it works with no problems on 1.6V it was rated for. I couldn't accomplish that on my old rig even with pushing more volts (same sticks). Nice!
