I would agree its the first major GUI change since windows 95, but I don't think that makes windows 8 a "bigger deal"
windows 95 was legendary and a leader in the market, but right now Microsoft is way behind google and apple in the tablet market, shoot even amazon beat them to the punch.

Windows 95 was a game changer, I'm not sure how W8 Metro and tablet is going to do that again, considering there's little reason to even purchase Windows 8 or a W8 tablet/phone right now over the competition. I'll be getting W8 to replace Vista and W7, for $40 each, but it is a minor upgrade, not like the insane upgrade that going from Windows 3.1 to 95 was.

Yes, because Windows 8 will mark the death of MS.

Jkjk

But seriously I don't see how Windows 8 will be a big deal. I don't have any big problems with it, especially with Classic shell, but it's nothing special either.

am been using it for a bit now and it is just windows 7 with start menu removed and the metro UI added.

Nothing major for desktop users. At least it's an OS that works with tablets.

Means big news for Microsoft because now they will get money from their app store.

On a different note, why am I able to install an app for flash light on my desktop lol. This is so stupid.

They should be like google play store and only show apps that are compatible and useful on a desktop.

Microsoft app store is still new, give it some time.

Anyways, it's the CEO of Microsoft, and he's doing promoting their new product. No need to look into it too much. When you start trying to make sense of marketing... logic generally falls apart.

Well, its the first time they'll have a truly modern mobile windows available, which was needed or Android/iOS would literally shut them out of the mobile market in its current direction.

The importance on the desktop really comes through in terms of linking all your devices together as part of one sync'd experience.

I feel the same way, good summation.

I agree with what's already been said in this thread. Windows 95 was a new paradigm, the first of its kind, whereas Windows 8 is playing catchup against the competition -- not that I don't like the end result. I installed Win8 a few days ago (school has sub to dreamspark), and after a couple days of using it the positives stand out a lot more than the negatives. It's certainly not perfect, and doesn't have the immediate gratification impact that Win7 had, but it's fast, fluid, and generally does what I want and need it to do. Installation was also seamless, no driver problems in the slightest. I won't be uninstalling.

This is great, finally edging in a new world of technology instead of riding the Win 95 bandwagon for the past 17 years. This means Win 9/10/11 and beyond should retain the same new start menu model. Absolutely loving it, and cant wait to see Windows 9 when Win 8 is finally finished and polished. thumb.gif
