Will a 650W PSU suffice for my build?

Thread Starter
Hi guys, I'm new at building my own computer so I'm just checking out if a 650W can power my system at the moment.

CPU: Intel Core i5-3570k 3.4GHz Quad-Core Processor
CPU Cooler: CM Hyper 212 EVO Cpu Cooler
RAM: Corsair Vengeance 8 GB DDR3 1600 MHz CL9 Dual Channel
GPU: Gigabyte GTX 670 OC 2GB
Storage: 1 TB and another 2 TB Seagate HD (3GB together)
Motherboard: ASRock Z77 Extreme 4 ATX LGA1155 Mobo
Case: Cooler Master 690 II advanced mid tower (3 fans inside, im adding an additional 4).

Do you guys think I'll be able to run it with a 650W PSU? Also, will it allow me room to add another GTX 670 in the future to upgrade? Or should I just spend a few extra dollars and grab a 700W+? Thanks in advance, I really do appreciate it.

Should be good with it. As long as you choose a valid power supply and not some knock-off one. Thanks

+1, 650W is perfect.

I'd personally spend the few extra dollars for a 750W, it wont be as stressed atleast if you get another 670.

I think I will just go for a 750W one. Is there any special brand you guys recommend? I'm looking at the Antec High Current Gamer 750W/Earthwatt 750W for the Antec series... I don't know which brand is the best.

77 Watts for the processor (Call it 120 for OC), 170W for the 670 (We'll call it 210 for OC), Figure 100W for the mobo, 50W for the drives, 50W for your fans/cooler/lights, puts you at 530W. 650 gives you plenty of extra.

750's kinda the wrong size for you-- overkill for your planned rig, but not really enough for SLI (though it might be okay, depending on your OC.) I'd want 800-850 for 2 670s. Also, if you want SLI Make sure the PSU gives you 4 6/8 pin PCI connectors. A lot of them only give you two.

Could always get the same PSU as mine, this 750W can produce just under 1000W.

Or get the 900W version?

No, this is just wrong, a 600 watt PSU can easily power a 670 SLI system. The motherboard, HDD's, fans and extras would all amount to about 50 watts total, if that. Anyone recommending more than 650 watts for SLI (with GTX 600 cards) is just going into paranoid overkill, really, this isn't Fermi.

The 670's listed TDP is 170 watts, which means if you OC it you're looking at at least 200. His CPU's TDP is 77 watts, but with the overclocks you can get out of sandy/ivy I'd round up to 100, maybe more, which puts you at 500w. Mobo + drives might draw 50 watts at load, OP listed about 8 fans in his build which could easily draw 20 watts together, maybe more depending on the fan. Don't get me wrong, I'm all for matching your PSU to your load, (and I know that if you draw 601 watts from a decent quality 600w PSU the magic smoke will probably stay inside), but I like a little more than 30 watts extra.

Though you're right, going too far over 700 is overkill. My 700w psu only has 2 PCI-E power ports, which makes it a no-go for SLI anyway.
