Borderlands 2 with Hybrid PhysX - Page 17

Seems to me there are two kinds of Nvida PhysX, one where you're using two Nvidia cards, and another where you are using a AMD and an Nvidia.smile.gif

I'm not trying to be funny, but just pointing out that it seems like its a completely different experience. I am using a HD 6970 and a GT530 (essentially a re branded GT430) and it seems to run great with PhysX on High setting in Borderlands 2. The GT430 only has 96 cores, is no where near a 580 or 640.

I have seen numerous posts where people using an Nvida card for their main card actually slow down performance if the dedicated Physix card is not a powerful card, but it seems like when you add even a entry level card with at least 96 cores to a mid to high range AMD GPU, you get to enable PhysX and still keep an enjoyable frame rate. I'm not saying one platform is better than the other, just seems like you get a different result.

Before I added in the GT530, I could not run high physics, and even low seemed to affect frame rate.

I went to the bandit area right outside of Santuary like the person did in the post and recorded my frames using the log tool in Afterburner. You can see when the GT530 (GPU #2) starts doing its job, the frame rate stayed pretty high:

So whats my point? Simply this:

If you have a GTX 680 you probably should save your money and run Physx on that, unless you want to add another one in, or have a pretty good second card to use.
If you have a mid to high end AMD card, find a GT430, GT440, or GT530 card with 96 cores for around $20 to $45 bucks, and add it in by all means and enjoy some extra particles and explosions!

if people are spending $500 on a gpu you can bet they are expecting more than 20 fps.

Do you have to have a Nvidia card to use it as a PhysX Processor? I have two HD5870's but I don't crossfire. Is it possible to use second one as the processor? When I enable physx in BL2 my game grinds to a halt 10-15 FPS. Without it I run at 60-80 FPS everything maxed.
well the gt 220 i have does have 96 cuda cores but isnt enough to run physx for more then a day of play. but even after removing the gt 220 i have been able to run in game physx to medium and able to play some what. even though my fps does drop down in to the low teens during heavy physx usage.

but what i still do not understand is that even thought gpuz shows i had physx on both the 5870 and gt220 i could not see it being used in any benchmark that has physx in it. even though for that 1 day it worked in bl2 but no where else.

and i wish i had 2 of these 5870

alright so is anyone able to play at around 45-60fps with phys on high using hybrid physx? or is every one stuck getting slowdowns to 16 fps spikes? try going to caustic caverns to test it out.
if so please let me know which hybrid physx method used, ingame settings, .ini tweaks, hardware used, anything else

I play with physx on medium - 8800 ultra for physx, 6970 for graphics. I like my vsync, so I'm either at 60 or 30 fps (mostly 60). I tried running it on high, but it's just not happy.

To everyone having issues with borderlands 2 all you have to do is remove 2 files PhysXDevice.dll and PhysXCore.dll from 2k games/borderlands/win32. If you moved anything other than those 2 files put it back. If you dont remove both your running cpu physx. . Also so everyone knows you can run crossfire with hybrid physx.

anyone wana test this out?

Those are the only files I moved. I used this guide:

3) Remove 2 files PhysXDevice.dll and PhysXCore.dll (this deviates from the original poster's guide, but I read it on many other sites)

and this worked fine before the Borderlands2 update of October 26, 2012 :Update 1.1.3 addresses graphical options and bugs.

after that I had to do the last part of the instructions:
edit C:\Document and Settings\user\Documents\My Games\Borderlands 2\WillowGame\Config\WillowEngine.ini and add bDisablePhysXHardwareSupport=False to [SystemSettings] section

after the WillowEngine.ini file edit, it works again.
