Borderlands 2 with Hybrid PhysX - Page 28

If anybody else still sees this pop up on google search.................

I've now tested this with a gts 450 and a gtx 570 running as dedicated physx card with 5970+5870 as main rendering cards.

With both the GTS 450 and GTX 570; anything higher then 512mb and 32mb causes borderlands 2 not to open. As far as any real performance difference between the lesser and higher memory allocations, hard to say, gpu's never went above 15% (450) and 10% on the 570 usage. But cards have it so why not, 512/32 has been stable.

Also hybridize is nice, run pre before installing nvidia drivers then hybridize after and delete or remove from borderlands 2 win 32 directory the cuda.dlls and physx.dlls except for extension one.

You should run Fluidmark 1.5 and see what your GPU usage is, I would be very interested to see. In Borderlands2, my GT530 never gets above aprox 30%, but in Fluidmark it gets to about %79 usage. My friend has a GT620 which is the same GPU as my card, also 96 cores, and he gets the same percentage usage on each program. My theory is that since the GTS450 has 192 cores, and the GTX570 has 480 cores, they can render the same number of particles in the game without as high as a shown usage, because if the usage is percentage of load on the GPU, 30% of 96 cores is 28.8% of its Shader core capacity, and 15% of the GTS450s 192 cores is 28.8% usage, 10% of the GTS 450 is 48% usage (since each card has different subsystems like the GTS 450's GDDR5 memory and 24 Texture Mapping Units vs the 16 in mine and my friend's card, the GTX 570 having 60 Texture Mapping Units, the percentage usage is not an exact comparision) but I think a general pattern is there.

Since my card can deal with the physx without any performance issues, to me, I think the lowest power consuming and quietest and coolest you can use is best.

Also hybridize is nice, run pre before installing nvidia drivers then hybridize after and delete or remove from borderlands 2 win 32 directory the cuda.dlls and physx.dlls except for extension one.

I also put in a gts 450 as a hybrid physx card among three other 6970's. Playing at 5670x1080 res. Took a while to get it working after a couple bsods. Checking its load with Afterburner and getting 30% max and averaging 15 percent load with high physx setting turned on. My GTs450 is a 1024mb card and have no issues opening BL2. Though at first it crashed a couple times.

Trick is I think to delete all the cuda*.dll and all Physx*.dll (except PhysxCooking, PhysxExtenesions, and physxLoader.dll) files, and not touch any of the ini files. Some guide I followed mentioned adding a line to bEnable Physx which was a mistake I think. Though I didn't have to run the preparehybrid program - I did have to reinstall clean the AMD ATI 12.11 betas over again.

I also ended up installing nvidia 306.63 driver with Physx 9.12.0807 someone had posted. I tried 310.90 and with 9.12.1031 and had bsods. Not sure if it was driver version related but stopped experimenting once I was able to load BL2 successfully and get load on the physx card.

Had a lot of fun playing finally after all the trial and error. With my 6970s I get between 30-60 fps but it doesn't feel too jerky. Set most of the quality setting up in game except ambient occlusion (turned off). Anyhow going to try to squeeze out a few more fps out of it tomorrow..

Thanks to the Hybridize people. Was fun. Will look into a donation for sure...

I just felt like bumping this and saying I FINALLY got it working! 7870 plus a GT440 for physx! It only took 5 days and countless install/uninstalls.

Did you find any trick that finally worked?

I just upgraded to nvidia (from a 6970) and I was really impressed on the Physx effects in this game. I just forwarded this to my buddy who is running xfire 6950s, hope he can get it running.

On average how does this work with crossfire? The last thing I want is more lag and stutter (have it in a few games)

Works great for me in triple 6970 trifire and triple monitor eyefinity. Pretty much boost performance a great deal. The only slow downs I think are due to an aging cpu not being able to drive three video cards. Crossfire shouldn't be as bad.

Out of curiosity, are you running one monitor per card, or all three off the "main" card?

Ive had a very long discussion with the creator of Hybridize about optimizations done to borderlands 2 PhysXcore.dll. He claims its a generic one which is why he wont release a patched version of it (he also claimed in a PM to me that he didn't own the game to begin with, yet said otherwise in the thread where the discussion was taking place). My reasoning for why I think the physXcore.dll has been modified by gearbox is that using the original on a fully patched game from steam shows much better performance using high PhysX while running on the on the CPU, consistenly showing 10 fps higher minimum frames ,over the one he supplies in his patch, time and time again in places like bloodshot stronghold.

Now this is of course tested on the cpu and my reasoning is that if it runs better on the cpu the optimizations should translate as well to the GPU accelerated PhysX. It would be very easy to prove me right or wrong, simply patch the original physxcore.dll in the games win32 folder and release it as a separate download.

In defense of the Hybridize creator, the 600 series which most of us is likely using as PhysX Ded. Gpus, has been rumored and supposedly confirmed by an NVidia rep. to have lower PhysX performance than that of the 500 series. If this is true I cannot confirm myself at this point.

Take a look here for user experience of the PhysX running on 500 and 600 series cards.

My tests of a GTX 260 Black edition from xfx is 25% faster when it comes to PhysX than a 640 GT.
