FX-8150 Throttling

Thread Starter
So today i brought a shiny new FX-8150 and stuck it into my ASRock 880GM-LE FX, i have the latest BIOS and it all works ok. Except the CPU throttles to 1.4Ghz at tempritures as low as 45C. This just does not seem right wonder if anyone could help me out in figuring out why this is happening. I read somewhere that this can happen when the CPU draws to much power or something along those lines. I will also add that under prime95 load those black square things near the CPU were burning hot to touch xD

Anyone got and ideas / solutions / etc?

Oh also running at stock clocks, turbo core enabled, stock cooler.

The VRM's are too hot, you'll want to add heatsycs and a fan to blow onto them for the best cooling potential.
Something like This ought do to the trick for the fan to cool, as for the heatsyncs you'll need some tape and some copper heatsyns. I think eBay would be your best bet for those smile.gif

Your going to need to slow down its power usage...you could try to lower the V-Core and underclo...underclo...underclo...(#LOGIC ERROR:3476)...Run it slower than stock settings. As long as you get more than 1.4GHz it will be a net gain for you.

Though some extra cooling for the VRMS might do the trick as well (the black cubes that were too hot to touch). Unfortunately I think that board was meant to use the 4100's...maybe 6100's. I think it might only be 3+1 Phase power.

I see, you wouldn't think a motherboard with FX-8150 on the CPU compatibility list would have such problems them again it is ASRock xD

I'm trying a fan over that area atm to see if that makes any slight difference, if it really comes to it i can just put a Phenom II 965 into this system. Hopefully it can handle that :\

Well im running Prime95 blend test right now with a fan over some of that area it was promising for the first 2 minutes or so the CPU got to about 52 and then.... i guess the rest got to hot and the system throttled.

Any other model of CPU that can fit in the socket will be just fine I think. I know I've read of people even getting decent overclocks on 4100's on this board. I used this board myself on a couple 4100's. I liked it at first since I wasn't used to the UEFI and this one still has the old fashioned BIOS on it...unless I am getting my boards mixed up.

Anyway...yeah, power is the problem. You also should keep in mind that even if you can keep them cool you are still going to be really stressing those VRMs. The FX8150 is a power hog and really requires a decent motherboard to run it.

Though have you tried anything other than P95 on it? About the only thing I know of in the real world that will actually stress all eight cores is some video encoding software. You might be fine for day to day.

Whoa ease up!

1. That board is a bare 3+1 layout and is NOT meant to take the load of a 125w chip, even on stock.

2. The 8150 is an EXTREMELY power hungry chip and has reportedly caused throttling issues on quality 4+1 heatsinked boards. That chip is best served on a 6+2 phase board at the very least.

Why would you get a chip like the 8150 and skimp out on the board confused.gif

Either way, I'd HIGHLY advice you to replace the board ASAP and stop running stress tests. That's just asking for trouble.
