Need a new DSLR

Hey all,

I currently have a Sony A350 and its not taking as good as photos as I would like. Rather than invest in new lenes' for it, my wife and I are talking about buying a new one but we don't know what to get.

I know we want a Cannon or Nikon and we don't want it to cost more than $1,000.

What can you suggest?

is there a reason the sony a350 isnt working for you? this will help us figure out what you dont like in a camera and suggest one that is a better fit.

I can't imagine the A350 not taking 'good enough' pictures for a normal photographer.. You probably don't need a new camera (I'm not trying to be a jerk, I just don't want you to waste your money).

Buy a book about composition and lighting instead!

I'd suggest the Nikon D3100. The D3200 was just released so D3100 prices have fallen; I actually prefer the 3100. With the money you save over higher-end bodies, you can get a nice fast prime or a reasonable zoom when you move beyond the 18-55. Alternatively, the D5100 is a great body with the sensor from the D7000 just without the on-body controls.

Slap a 35mm 1.8G or a 50mm 1.8G on either and you'll be rolling with a very fine setup.

And this by my A350 on Auto Settings. Not bad but not as good.

what makes the pictures from the canon/nikon more amazing than others?
