here's an article article regarding "dirty" front element

The dirt not affecting the front element makes sense in the way that you can make a wire fence invisible if you can get your lens close enough to it. (Like: when shooting zoo animals) I have always kept my lenses clean, and do not speak from experience when it comes to the effect of dirt on the glass. The inner element may have a greater effect. And there is always the dust on the sensor thing.

As far as filters: I keep a good quality UV/haze filter on at all times. Other filters as the needs arise. Looking in my filter collection, I seem to buy B+W brand the most....

No amount of money will improve your photo taking skills or even your image quality beyond a certain degree. I'd just buy some books on lighting and technique and go from there. Even if you spend $1,000 on a canon 60D or some other top of the line DSLR with an L lens your photos will still look like crap if you don't understand lighting in depth. Photography is all about lighting, if you can learn light well than your photography skills and therefore pictures will sky rocket in quality.

As for gear wise, we don't even know what kind of photography you're into so I can't make any recommendations there but your priority should be understanding light aka buying this book

This.

I know we want a Cannon or Nikon and we don't want it to cost more than $1,000.
What can you suggest?

I recently upgraded to the A57 from my A300 as it was feeling a bit dated. The a57 has no problem auto focusing in the dark with the built in flash. The a300 had trouble auto focusing in low light and even with the built in flash wouldn't auto focus at all when It got dark. When my friends and I go shooting, I like to use burst mode to try to catch muzzle flash and falling shells. The a57 shoots 10fps or 12fps cropped while the a300 only hits 3fps. The a57 also does a better job processing jpegs in camera than the a300. Though the a350 is dated, its more than fine for getting shots of your pc. Like others have said, you gotta work on your lighting.

2nd one looks like it is basically the same specs but a bit cheaper. Is one better than the other?

Well I haven't read more than a page or so of this thread but I'm just gonna jump at it.

1) I'm going to assume that your camera and lenses aren't defective.

2) You should go through the manual of your camera. Test out the functions and understand what they do.

3) You don't need to buy books or magazines. There are plenty of resources on the internet. Try http://www.photographymad.com/

4) If you're new, just keep shooting. Review your pictures, see what needs improvement. Photography is a skill and you will get better at it through practice.

5) Check out DPreview contests and Interfacelift for inspiration.

get moar lights.... This is my setup for product photography.

I used to just use a 99cent poster board from walmart and a few cheapo light fixtures from around the house. Results were decent, Cost was less than 20 bucks. Just make sure what ever bulb you use, to use the same one for all the fixtures so it doesn't mess up your color balance.

Here's a quick one I did in a pinch with just a posterboard and some cheapo ikea lamps, nothing great but done in under 10 mins with just stuff laying around the house

here are a few links to some cheap set ups

Good luck and remember 99% of the time if your picture sucks, it's prob you not the camera. Not trying to get your down, its just something I tell myself all the time. I had the Sony A200 and A300, they were good cameras. Heck I think they do better at low ISO than majority of the new cameras. They were pretty much the last CCD cameras available to my knowledge.
