2nd one looks like it is basically the same specs but a bit cheaper. Is one better than the other?

What lenses do you have now? I would recommend getting some primes like a 50 and a 35mm. Good bang for your buck and they'll teach to move around to get a good shot.

Either of those will produce great photos. But if you want to try a new lens just to see the difference try a prime lens. They're generally higher quality glass at lower cost and like I said, they'll teach you to move around.

I would say I use my 50mm 90% of the time, even indoors. That being said I would love to get a 35mm.

I second this, I only use my 50mm 1.8 anymore, the only time I'd use my kit is for wide angle landscape shots. With a 28mm, 50mm, and possibly a 85 you cover a wide range of focal lengths and have very, very, high quality glass for an inexpensive price and excellent low light capability's that you wont find in even $1,000+ L lenses.

I love these lenses because they're so small too. I just got a new jacket just for photography (paid $4 for it at Goodwill) and I can fit 3 lenses in it and it has 3 pockets left for anything else I might need to have at hand.

So if you're shooting a fast paced event with primarily prime lenses you can switch lenses very fast without worrying about having to adjust your exposure due to using a cheap variable aperture zoom lens. The only time I'd recommend a zoom lens is if it doesn't have a variable aperture.
