Trendy here, and I'm back with a new rebuild/upgrade.

The idea behind this build is to downsize. For the last 7 years I've had nothing but large full tower computer cases. A few weeks ago, I decided that I was tired of the maintenance and the noise from these larger enclosures, and that it was time for a change in my computing lifestyle.

It's time for me to go Micro ATX

Small update *no pictures yet*

I got my case yesterday. I was coming home from getting my daughter some frozen yogurt, when I passed the UPS guy leaving our neighborhood. I rushed home and found it waiting on the front porch!

I will post some photos I took yesterday once my motherboard arrives this evening.

I do have a few notes on the case:

1. It looks like I might get the Corsair H100 instead of the Thermaltake Water 2.0. This is because there is a lot less space between the motherboard mounting area and the top of the case than I had envisioned by looking at photos. The Thermaltake will fit, but it'd be an extra tight fit.

2. The case is constructed very well for a $100 case. It's been years since I've owned a case in this price range, and I would say that manufacturers have really upped their game here.

3. I have some exciting mod ideas for the case. ^_^

Update #2: Build in progress

Okay, sorry for not posting an update for a few days. I was a bit busy with some other things. Anyways... I've got a few crappy cell phone photos!

So on Tuesday, September 18Th, I got my Fractal Design Arc Mini:

As you can see, it's much smaller than my Corsair 800D. In fact, it's so small, it almost fits inside the 800D. A big change for me, I know!

At this point I had a case, but not much else to put inside of it other than some boring hard drives, ssds, and a PSU.

However, Wednesday and Thursday came this week, and I got my Asus Maximus V Gene and XFX HD7950 Double Dissipation Edition!

I got a great deal on the Maximus V Gene, open box from Newegg for $140. It came with everything, plus several extra SATA cables from a different motherboard. Which I was okay with, honestly, I'd rather have more stuff that less.

Alright, one to installation. I still don't have everything that I need for the build, but I now have a basic functioning system.

That's my daughter, she was helping me by holding onto the screws while I put the motherboard inside the case thumbsupsmiley.png

There's one thing I have to say about mATX after this build.... it's cramped. There was one thing that saved me a bit of a headache though:

This nifty little thing saved me from the "small cables hell" at the end of the build. I pulled them all out of the case, plugged them into this extender, and then plugged the extender into the motherboard in one, swift motion. It's something small, but it saved me a well-known headache at the end of the build.

So far, I'm happy with this rebuild. The case is amazing, I have a new video card, and my work space has a few more free inches due to the smaller footprint.

I'M FAR FROM DONE!

I have a couple of mods planned for this case, which will be posted here in the next few weeks. I also have to purchase a new integrated WC loop; either thermaltake or corsair.

I'm already working on mod #1: sectioning off the lower part of the case. This is a feature mATX cases just don't have, and one that I missed from my 800D. I like to hide my cables in the lower part to keep things tidy. So I'm taking a piece of acrylic, molding it, and painting it black. I started tonight. I'll admit, I'm a n00b at acrylic molding, but it's working out pretty good so far and shouldn't look too ghetto when finished.

Until next time! Thanks for reading!

Quick update. Just ordered a Corsair H100 from Mr. Airdeano here on OCN. Got a great deal on it, can't wait to get it in my rig.

I've also been having some heat issues with the 7950 I ordered. I don't really want to send it back, and I've determined that the particular model I bought has a really crappy cooler on it. It might look well made, but the contact point on the GPU is just bare, unfinished copper... it's bad. So I'll be ordering another closed WC loop, probably an H50/70 and a bracket for the GPU. This means I'm back to water, just in different form, haha.

More to come.... thumb.gif

Update #3: Cooling problems and ideas

Okay, so I haven't updated this in a few days. I received my Corsair H100 in the mail yesterday. Unfortunately, the housing of the radiator was warped. I'm not sure if it was due to the packaging or what, but I couldn't get it to line up with the fan holes. I'm getting my money back, but the wait to get a refund has got me thinking....

I'm not ready to give up water cooling just yet!

I've updated my parts list with the water cooling parts I plan to buy, minus the fittings. This should be a nice, long, drawn out process of purchasing an entirely new setup. I'm broke, but I want the nice cooling water provides. Plus, I want the challenge of getting it all inside my tiny case ^_^

More to come!
