Alzheimer's Disease has been one of the diseases this science really has impacted in a good way. My Grandmother has it. She is far better off then my other Grandma that had it 20 years ago.

Why can't we do both? Be #1 in the WORLD and Save it also!

This thread is well said Mach1, and i am not the only one that will do something, JUST for that Good, Fuzzy, Warm feeling you get when you do something good and expect NOTHING In return.

I FOLD when i can, i have been trying to get up my own Team on F@H, to be "Beside" OCN's Team, but since it's a One man Team so far, i am gonna jump on board of the OCN Express, and help us be NUMBER 1! thumb.gif

I see where your coming from but please consider...

There is also a point of view that says, 'stop shoving folding down our throats' (actual words from a similiar thread)... which is also valid

As with all things internet, people read stuff that is written, form an opinion and run with it. Mach1 was simply calling for OCN members to assist in folding to beat our dread competitors... nothing more.

However that message seems to have been lost... as is the way of the internet. frown.gif

@ PimpSkyline, we can do both but your last sentence be it jest or not, is not helpful... really.

Yes, he is right.

This thread was meant to drum up support for OCN's team, but I'm also glad for the conflicting points of view. Discussing things is always a good way to go.

I know some of you are sick of hearing about how wonderful Folding@Home is. Count me in. So why do I do it? I love the competition. I was in the Team Competition for nearly a year and a half, and in that time my team won 8 times. That's a record. That's what drives me.

The downfall? I killed my TC rig in the process. Foldin' ain't easy.

But don't let that scare you. The TC is a place for a special kind of folder; the crazy kind. We need help from all sorts of OCN members - the sane and the crazy. The sane don't usually run their machines like the crazy do wink.gif

So if you think you can help your team in any way, post here. There isn't a group of people like OCNers on any other team (trust me, I've looked). We'll be here to help you and get you all set up.

And now it's time for my massive multi-quote:

I don't think this got answered well. That is for the group of crazies known as the Team Competition. That's where a group of OCNers form teams and fold against each other. There are 20 teams, and the competition resets each month. Great fun, but it isn't mandatory to join. You can fold as much or as little as you want.

In relation to the OP, what annoys me is how there seems to be an all or nothing approach to folding. You should either fold or you don't. I run BOINC. Why? Because it utilises my hardware in the most efficient way possible, maximising the impact I have on the project I am working on. Why does the concept of folding annoy me? It annoys me because other distributed computing systems get highly overlooked.

This leads onto my next problem. This post sums it up nicely:

Some folders expect too much. I don't wish to point the finger at you, but that post sums my frustration up nicely. Furthermore, why do I always get the feeling that people highlight the fact that it is helping to find the cure to cancer. Why just cancer?
Quote:
This is of significant academic interest and has major implications for medical research into Alzheimer's disease, Huntington's disease, and many forms of cancer, among other diseases.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Folding@home

Why do people forget Alzheimer's and Huntington's. You are the people who are folding and promoting to others, why do allot of people miss out on all the information.

I am of the opinion that if people wish to run F@H/BOINC then they wish to help, they should help in a way that is most beneficial to those they are helping. This, to me, mean getting the most out of the hardware. If you have an AMD/ATI card and find a project that you like, run BOINC. If you are happy to put up with the poor number say with folding. If you have Nvidia card and find a project you like, run BOINC, if not run folding.

What put me off folding was the fact I don't like thing being thrown at me, then when I reject them, criticised for my decisions.

I had written more, but I am going to leave it there. F@H annoys me more than fanboy wars and patent trolling, but it does good work. Thinking about it, my main problem is it overshadows and crushes other projects that are trying to do the same thing, for just as many good causes.

Thank you very much for you well-reasoned post.

In everything, there are things that are more and less popular. In distributed computing, the more popular thing is Folding@Home. OCN has one of the most competitive folding teams in the world. I'm not debating whether or not F@H is more efficient or relevant to specific donors; I'm saying your team needs your help for glory! We are two spots away from being the top team in the world!

As a member of OCN (and as a competitive human being), that stirs something up in me.

I don't know about 'massive'... but yes, it will increase your power bill. There's no denying that. And if that tips the scales in the 'no' direction for you, then we understand. But helping your team in the quest of being Number One would be an amazing thing nonetheless.

That would be a decision best left up to each individual team member. If they want to support their team with a 386, I say great! Bring on the unicore work units!

Likewise for the last sentence.

Again I had written more, however I will just give you the numbers instead and most people will be able to figure out why I get annoyed.
The OCN BOINC team is 22nd in the world with just under 1000 members total, with only 200 recently active members. On the other hand, F@H team is 3rd with over 3000 Active CPUs within 50 days.

OCNers really are an amazing bunch, aren't we? We donate (and compete) in so many useful projects. With all the resources we throw at Folding, there are also 200 active Boincers! That really says a lot about us.

The OCN Folding team has 9,106 members who have submitted at least one work unit. Of those 9,106 members, 594 are recently active. I'm not sure how Stanford comes up with the active clients, because I've seen some pretty unusual stats from them about my folding contribution in the past.

Let's compare that to the [H]ardforum team. They are currently #2, but will be #1 very soon. They have 598 active members.

To our 13.5 million PPD average, they answer with 29 million PPD. More than double. Four more active members.
