Proposed upgrade from a Phenom

Thread Starter
I am getting together an upgrade plan for Christmas and Birthday (in March).

I am thinking of swapping my old Phenom II X4 out for an i7 2600K at Christmas (and an ASUS P8Z68-V LX motherboard).

For my Birthday (2nd and final phase of the upgrade) I'm thinking of going for an MSI 7950 to replace my XFX 5770.

Are these good choices? Do any of the components outshine eachother?

I think it's way too early to think about what you will buy in March, because information posted now will become outdated pretty quickly.

I'd actually wait and see what's projected to come out during that part of the year as this year draws to a close.

If new products are on the horizon, you may be able to save a significant amount of money by waiting and picking up new hardware then.

If you don't want to wait, the 2600K is still a great processor, and would do well paired with a 7950.

If your buying into Intel new why not just go for an Ivybridge. Its not a huge gain over Sandy but still a gain none the less and has features sandy doesn't.

And before anyone complains of heat issues I actually own one and am doing just fine.

Those are good choices. What are you using your rig for? If it's mainly for gaming then go for a 2500K or 3570K and save yourself some money, They are just as quick as the 2600K/3770K in games

A Z77 board might be a better investment.

at that price of the cpu, you'd be better off going 3770K.

BUT, ask for cash and wait for Haswell.thumb.gif

I just compared the benchmark scores of a 2600K to the 2500K and the latter seems slower, are the benchmarks indicating the comparison well? Is there no noticeable difference in practice?

Thanks but I cannot afford an extra £100 for the motherboard.

Yes, the 3770K does look to be a better CPU for the money so I'll look into it. I must say I only chose the 2600K based on popularity.

One of my goals is to get GTA IV running, 1920x1080, maxed out and full distances. Would I reach this goal when the 2600K is paired with the R7950? (At stock) Would this be possible with the 2500K or 3770K? (At stock)

Long story short, 2600k = 2500k + HT

The difference in games isn't proportional to price difference, but in applications that will make a good use of HT, the advantage of 2600k might be quite big.

Hmm, I won't just be gaming, maybe doing some video editing. I'll probably stick with the 2600K in this case, what about my questions relating to GTA IV?
