Do I take the Sandy bridge? Or wait for the new gen?

Thread Starter
Hey guys, so my mother needs (or should I say, "wants") a newer computer, and provided I can "upgrade" mine, I can scrap one up for her (GTX 460, i5 760 etc..)
So the question, do I upgrade now to a 2500k, 16GB RAM, Z77, or should I wait for the new generation intels to come out?
How long are we expected for release?

Thanks smile.gif

Ivy Bridge is already out, which are Intel's 22nm Sandy Bridge components that fit into LGA1155.
Also, Sandy Bridge E is also out which is LGA2011, this is supposed to be their future socket.
SBE has the 3820 and 3930k ~300$ and ~600$ respectively; mobos start at 200$.
2500k is definitely worth it considering prices.
How much are you looking to spend ?

Not to be a stinker but a newer generation of intels is out. Ivy Bridge.

I believe haswell is scheduled for april of 2013. The waiting game is pointless, you either want a new computer or you dont.

I know about Ivy bridge, but comparing the 2500k with 3570k (or the Ivy i5) there is barely any difference at all!
I've just mocked up a little upgrade:
i7 2600k
GIgabyte GA-Z77X-UD3H
2x 8GB G.Skill Ripjaws
This is within my affordable budget, and also add a H80 for cooling.

Read above, highly considering just upgrading now...

go with ivy and save some power no need to go to sandy ivy is faster and can over clock as well with less power i got mine to 4.7 at 1.28 v and 81C max temp 100% load but for you mother rig your not going to overclock that anyway so go ivy and be happy cause haswell is not that big a deal

if you really want future proof go for the lga2011 platform, else if you want something that's still good for years to come the 2600k combo looks pretty sweet rolleyes.gif
