No internet access - shared connection in Win 7

Thread Starter
I have set up ICS (I'm sure it's correct - I've re-done it several times) but the client computer only has network access, no internet access.

Both PCs are running Win 7.

the set up is

router --wifi--> host PC --crossover cable--> client PC

If I troubleshoot on the client computer it says "Local Area Connection" doesn't have a valid IP configuration.

The shared internet connection was working until yesterday. I bought a switch and arranged the cables so it went

router --wifi--> host PC --crossover cable--> switch --ethernet cable--> client PC

that didn't work though.

I was going to add other client PCs today. Now, there's no internet access on the client PC with or without the switch.

Thanks a lot

Can you post the output of the ipconfig /all command from both machines?

I right-clicked on the wireless connection on the host PC and checked the share connection and allow other users to change disable the connection boxes.

That's all I did last time... I think. As you know, I was doing all kinds of poop last time, not really understanding what it was; just doing what more knowledgeable people told me.

The networking works, but no internet access on the client PC.

I've also restarted the machines and router. Unplugged the crossover cable.

in cmd i've

ipconfig /release

ipconfig /renew

ipconfig /flushdns

ipconfig /goddammitdontmakemecomeinthereandbreakyourface

I've just used those guides. I'd already found them and followed them a few times today. No joy though.

Having said that, I wonder if I've been doing it incorrectly.

It says

"When you enable ICS, your local area network (LAN) connection gets a new static IP address and configuration, so you'll need to reestablish any TCP/IP connections between your host computer and the other network computers.

To test your network and Internet connection, see if you can share files between computers and make sure each computer can reach a website."

The connection I want to share is the wifi connection. Do I need to plug the host PC into the router or anything like that when I'm setting up the ICS?

The client PC will only connect to the internet if I disable the ethernet connection and enable the wifi connection.

On the client PC, it still says Local Area Connection, Unidentified Network.

Thanks

Any chance it's a messed-up setting in the router?

In what order should I restart / reboot / unplug 'stuff'?

Is the a cmd command to reset all internet settings?

Is it likely that plugging the cables into the switch automatically messed with some settings or more likely to be coincidence? As I said in the first post, with your guidance, it was all working well until I added the switch yesterday.

Thanks a lot

It has been my experience that ICS only works when the host PC is actually also the gateway. meaning you would have to have the modem directly wired into your host pc. the only modems that operate like that however, are usually Dial-up modems, or cellular network adapters.
Some modems have USB connections that may work as well.

I think its because ICS Handles NAT, and your host pc doesn't have a WAN IP address. Some Cable connections run in bridge mode and run the WAN ip directly to whatever is plugged into them.

Edit: it may also be that because your host PC is already on a LAN, and therefore the router is handling DHCP, which is forcing your computer to not. If your host PC was wired directly to the WAN, ICS would handle DHCP for the secondary pc.

Nemeis - I have no idea what you just said... smile.gif

If you're saying it won't work using a wifi connection from the host PC; well, it was up until yesterday.

If I misunderstood you (very likely), can you put it into n00b-speak.

Thanks
