In store headphones

Thread Starter
I'm looking for a good set of headphones for gaming that I can find locally in store, with a budget of $100- $200. My choices of stores that I know that sell headphones are Bestbuy, Fry's Electronics and Radio Shack. I'm in Phoenix so if anybody knows a better choice of local stores feel free to speak up.

Guitar Center is a great place, and some of the locations will let you demo headphones before you buy. also Best Buy seems to be increasing their selection of headphones, i can now find Sennheiser HD280's and HD380's at my local stores. a few years back this wasn't the case. just be aware that best buy usually has two different sections of headphones: a section around ipod's etc. (includes brands like skullcandy and beats) and another section around the music equipment (includes brands like koss, sennheiser, etc.). generally speaking, you'll want to head for the music equipment section.

as far as which headphones to choose, go to Guitar Center and Best Buy (they have listening stations) and demo different headphones. it's the quickest way to narrow down what sounds best to your ears (open back vs closed back, comparisons with different brands/models).

I was about to suggest Guitar Center as well. And the best buy music equipment thing. Dang.

Just make sure you give Guitar Center the name that appears on your bank account.

Well, I went to both Best Buy and Fry's today, Best Buy had some decent headphones on display, but were out of stock on all but that crappy ones. Fry's had a pair of really nice sounding Sony's on display, but again where out of stock. I picked up a pair of $40 JVCs, but I think I'll return them tomorrow (do they take products back if they're not defective?) along with the clip on mic that didn't work out of the box. On my way back I'll check out Guitar Center, would have never even thought of looking there. Thanks for the input...

While I'm at it, is there a frequency response I need to look for, or just the highest range (if I can't sample them [want something for both gaming, little bit of music & youtubing] )? The JVC's I got are 10Hz-24,000Hz, but sound a bit flat, with nearly no bass, sound about even with my cheap Plantronics headset.

P.S. Anyone know where I might be able to find Sennheiser PC 360s locally? Our local Best Buys don't carry them as some do.

32oz - it sounds like you need a starting point for some guidance on headphones. grab a cup of coffee and sit down for a while digesting these two resources:

Simca's (OCN's) Most Recommended Audio Products
Mad Lust Envy's Headphone Gaming Guide

Mad Lust Envy is primarily focused on console gaming, but it still applies to PC gaming. when you're done with those, some things to start considering:
- do you want open-back or closed-back headphones?
- do you prefer 'fun' sounding headphones or more analytical sounding headphones?
- consider your source; are you running a dedicated sound card or external DAC? are you running on-board audio? if so you might want to set some of your budget aside for the source.
- can your source adequately drive the headphones?

Got out to Guitar Center this morning, picked up a Sennheiser HD 380 Pro. They're amazing, as far as music, haven't tried gaming yet.

Edited: Btw, you can get a $30 coupon off of a purchase of $199 or greater, good thru the 30th at guitarcenter.com, if anyone's looking to save a few bucks smile.gif
