Will i need to buy a new PSU?

Thread Starter
Hello,

I am going to buy a new GPU, the sapphire radeon HD 7850, but im not sure if my current PSU will be able to handle it... ive always had a sapphire radeon HD 5770 so far and it has always worked fine. this is what the label of my current psu (its a A-open one) says:

model no: Z450-08APAF (450W peak)
AC input: 220-240V~, 5A, 50Hz
Max DC output: (+3.3V & +5V = 180W MAX, +12V1&12V2 = 348W MAX) 400W
DC output: +3.3V --28.0A (org), +5V -- 30.0A (red), +12V1 -- 18.0A (yel), +12V2 -- 18A (yel/black), +5Vsb -- 2.5A (purp), -12V -- 0.5A (blu)

I know people say that you need atleast a 500W psu for a 7850 but then i hear other people say its not necesarily needed if you have a quality psu, so will i have to buy a new one..? and if yes do you have any recommandations?

other specs:

Intel core i5 750 @ 2.67 Ghz
8gb RAM ddr3 (4x4)
128 GB SSD ( OCZ Agility 3)
1 other 1TB HDD
Windows 7 64-bit

Thx alot!thumb.gif

AMD recommends a minimum of a 500W power supply to power a system that has one 7850 in it, and the PSU you have right now is basically a generic 450W unit (not good).  So, I think  it should be replaced ASAP.

http://www.amd.com/us/products/desktop/graphics/7000/7850/Pages/radeon-7850.aspx#2

Are there any online stores you can order a new PSU from?

What would be your budget?

Honestly, I couldnt find any real information about it, it looks to be a pretty low end unit. Not to mention, according to what you have written it can only support 348W on the +12v rails (which is the figure that matters). If you werent pushing it before updgrading GPU might put it over. A new PSU might be a good precaution to take.

You can get this antec EA-650 for 45 after the rebate and 10 off promo code.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817371044&nm_mc=AFC-C8Junction&cm_mmc=AFC-C8Junction-_-na-_-na-_-na&AID=10446076&PID=3938566&SID=

Should be plenty for your setup.

It would be ok, but you'd be getting ripped off because of the Rosewill Capstones.  They are much better PSUs and you can get the non-modular 450W Capstone for the same price.  Not only that, but the 450W Capstone has a +12V capacity of 444W while the CX500 V2 only has a +12V capacity of 408W.

The modular 450W Capstone has the same capacity as its non-modular counterpart, and it's only $10 more ($70).

So I'm just saying that the Capstones give you much more for your money, plus they are high-end units whereas the CX500 V2 is more of a budget unit:

http://www.overclock.net/t/654983/on-corsair-psus/0_100

It's entirely up to you what you want to get for $60, but if it were my money then I'd get the 450W Capstone.

OP 348w on the +12v rails is not bad. Your PSU should have no problem handling a HD 7850. HD 7850 is quite power efficient. here is power consumption with a core i5 750

http://techreport.com/review/22705/xfx-radeon-hd-7850-and-7870-black-edition-graphics-cards/7

the entire PC draws 200w.

http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/Powercolor/HD_7850_PCS_Plus/26.html

HD 7850 draws around 110w .

7850 draw slightly more power than 5770.

http://www.anandtech.com/bench/Product/549?vs=538

Metro2033
289 Watts Vs. 258 Watts for HD5770 on the same system.

OCCT
218 Watts Vs. 206 Watts for HD5770.

I guess your PSU might be enough for the card if it handled the 5770.
Just don't do any kind of high overclocking with that PSU and you will be OK.
