2.1 System needs replacing!

Thread Starter
So here's the deal : I currently have one of these monsters in my room with a sub as well. It's connected to my PC via a LR audio cable to my sound card in the back of my PC. I'm looking to replace it with a different 2.1 system, preferably something newer, but with the same volume capabilities.

It sounds great, but it's big, I don't use the CD changer or tape decks, and I'd prefer not to have to use that cable. My main complaint is the center console because it takes up so much space. I'm willing to spend around $200 on a new system, provided I think it's worth that much. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance biggrin.gif

Note: the system shown isn't the one I actually own, just an example I found on google images to show relative size etc
Note2: I actually don't mind the size of the speakers themselves or the sub, the center console just takes up as much space as another damn speaker

You just need it for computer audio and not the other features like AM/FM radio, right?

No contest at $200 point.

These might meet your needs, only 199.99 after rebate. I'm looking to upgrade my current 2.1 setup as well around the holidays, and these are at the top of my list.

Yes I only need it for PC audio and don't care about CD/Tape/Radio/Anything else

Thanks for the replies, I'll keep those two saved. What's with the massive difference in size of speaker? Am I still going to get the same power with these vs. the ones I currently have?
Those units like the one you have are bigger than they really need to be, the speakers at least. I know that's not the exact one you have in the picture, but in general those stereos you can pick up from a place like Walmart are around 100-150 watts of total power. That Corsair unit is a little over 230 watts total power. They will bump/pump, whatever you wanna call it, no problem at all thumb.gif

For volume, the A2's will probably be much louder than you had before as they are very efficient. Unless you can provide your exact model, I won't know about bass. They provide more bass than most generic compacts like that, but not all (the bass they have is much cleaner and tighter though). If you need a lot of low-end thumping, you might consider Klipsch ProMedia 2.1 instead, but the A2's are much, much higher quality sound.

If you're looking for active speakers, best you'll get SQ wise are the M-Audio BX5a-D2 at that price range. The Audio Engines are only a choice if you're wanting more bass from your speakers and have no desire to get a subwoofer eventually. The M-Audios will do fine for most purposes without a subwoofer.
