Bad Power Supply? Any tests I can do?

Thread Starter
Are there any tests I can do that may help determine if a power supply is giving a bad current/flow of power or whatever to my PC?

I've begun isolating an issue with my PC completely randomly crashing and have replaced everything except my power supply. I'm wondering if perhaps there's an irregularity with the flow of power to my PC. We've had a few power outages/surges over the past year.

Everything is powering up just fine and will run for hours, but the crashes happen at random... sometimes immediately after boot, sometimes after a marathon of gaming. I cannot right now force it to crash.

I don't know if you can check if you see AC in your DC outlet of the 12V. If you see some V, you have a faulty power supply (he can't convert properly the AC to DC).

You also can check the 12V if it is really 12V.

On side note, I really dont know which pin is which but you can google it I think.

All you need is a multimeter.

Good luck, hope I help.

I'll have to check it out. Was hoping there may be a solution that doesn't require me to buy anything tongue.gif

I don't know if you can thrust the reading you can find with some program in windows like HWmonitor. If you see a bad 12v or and V it can be a hint but I will thrust that a 100%. If you see something strange, I believe you can try to find someone you maybe not who own a multimeter and use it.

Side note : Multimeter can be usefull everywhere you have low voltage (don't try 120V AV with a cheap unit plz XD). You can check your battery to! biggrin.gif

Is it the Seasonic in question? And don't trust hardware monitor's readings, a multimeter is the best way

Yes it's the SeaSonic in my sig rig...

After seeing prices of multimeters, I think I'll just by a new power supply. I have been wanting a new one anyway (more wattage).

Thanks for the advice guys! I'll see if one of my friends has a multimeter I could borrow, but like I said, gonna get a new PSU anyway. Just was trying to isolate that the PSU is 100% the issue.

I doubt your PSU is out of spec. Seasonic is a good company which means they use protection methods. If it was out of spec it would shut down. I'd try putting the PSU in another computer and see if it causes that computer to crash

Are there any PSU related stress tests I can do? I cannot force a crash right now, it happens completely randomly. If I could specifically stress test the PSU that would help.
