Advances in Computing - Page 2

With regards to the Apollo landings, you guys have to bare in mind that most of the electronic technology used is already out of date before the start of the mission. This is in part because it takes years to build and test equipment for things like those missions. But it's also due to the fact that NASA often choose older technology from the offset because the bugs and whatnot are already known. It's much like how data centers never use the latest technology in storage. They let the kinks get worked out before risking their own data.

The first group of space shuttles suffered from way out of date electronics (and computing power). The replacement for Challenger got a big upgrade compared to the original craft.Planes like the B-52 (first put in service around 1953 have constantly had their electronics upgraded, and are planned to be around a long time still. One good example was the F-105.In service in 1956.It had state of the art electronics and was very heavily used in Vietnam,10 years later. The plane was rock solid steady flying supersonic,200ft off the ground. In this profile the plane just could not be hit(or seen) but it had to pop up to bomb and many planes and men were lost.
