No they don't. Read the OP, the publisher owns the IP. The developer gets screwed.

A publisher's job is very important. Most developers are clueless in regards to marketing. The majority of developers also don't have enough funding to make their projects work. By working with Kickstarter and a publisher, they get to keep more freedom and get more funding too.

The purpose behind Kickstarter is so that developers/artists/etc. have full artistic and development control of their game/movie/product. It means they can get funding without the entanglements of large publishing/investment companies. Potential customers will support their products.

I like how a AAA company do a KK, and people only beat on the publisher.
The whole idea of game related KK is to give people more money to make more money, not to mention most successful one are not create by poor people.

This is what I was trying to say. Far more elegant than my 3am streamofconsciousness with punctuation.

For this specific offer, yes.

For the concept of using Kickstarter to get the green light from a publisher, no.

Is not this the whole point of them releasing the same type of game over and over and over ? it is that they dont see cod-like sales in other genres . what about what WE gamers want ? an old school RPG game once in a while ? no they dont want that .

And about testing market demand with KS , no . If you - a publisher - see sales in a certain niche genre or a certain game , publish another one with your own money not backers money .

The failure of a game that was Medal of Honor (the 2010 one) sold 1.5 million in 5 days.
A decent amount of media coverage could have pushed Witcher into the AAA blockbuster range. As is, if you go to a LAN of casual/social gamers, you'll get somewhere between 1/3 and 1/2 that haven't even heard of The Witcher.
Good products might sell themselves, but advertising sells them better.
I mean seriously, 1.5M PC sales is comparable to Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone's PC version...

This

Im sure a small company like CD projekt is happy with their sales but 1.5 million over a year would be considered a colossal failure to any publisher. People need to stop saying look at the sales of the witcher or portal 2 etc. They have to realize any publisher or any publisher that doesnt have the money making machine steam would consider these sales a failure.

AAA games have had their 15 minutes in the spotlight. Time for more developer funded, GOOD, FUN, games. The internet has made/is making publishers irrelevant...

Considering their budget of 8 million dollars , I am sure they are quite happy about it . With only 8 million they created the perfect PC game - although marred by a few design choices - . With a big publisher they would make a game with , lets say , 10 million and dump another 70 million on marketing and expect that it sells for double the money they put in .

Lets take W2 and Kingdom of Amalur as an example , W2 with only 8 million and KoA with 100 million budget . The only thing that I know about KoA is what I saw in pics and what I heard about it , it does not look it would take 20 million to develop or 10 even . W2 on the other hand cost 8 million in what I see as the perfect PC game ( imo ) . Why the 100 million budget then ? marketing thats why .

So W2 sold 1.5 million for more than double or triple the initial cost , KoA on the other hand needed 3 million sales to break even as I read , which it did not as of 90 days after release ( it sold 1.2 M ) , I dont know about sales now .

Fast forward to today , CDP is making another game while 38 studios bankrupted .

Big publishers dont want W2 sales , thats pocket change for them . Thay want a game that sells for half a billion or something .

I will stick to indies and KS games , thats where the fun at .

kickstarter seemed like the holy grail, a place where good developers could weave their art without having to worry about inserting BS, consoletard or FPS-friendly junk into their games just to secure funding - and now big companies want to cash in and molest more good ip? im tired of crap games, im tired of the decline of the fallout ip, im tired of the decline of the elder scrolls ip, im tired of relying on self- funded indie projects for good games

kickstarter is for art and good games, aaa publishing is for sellout, lifeless, souless big-money games. please keep these two distinct and apart
