Build help for a rank amateur

Thread Starter
Hi all. I'm new to these boards and thought I've done alot of searching I can't find the info I'm looking for. I built my last system but I'd consider myself a noob when it comes to building.

I'm looking to upgrade my current system on a budget. I'm not a die-hard gamer, but I do enjoy FPS games and my system just isn't enough to handle the most current ones. I don't need cutting edge, just something fairly current that will run newer games (at 1024X768)has some upgrade ability later on down the road. I also am interested in doing some overclocking.

I know I'm going to need a new graphics card and depending on if I need to upgrage my mobo and cpu, I can look at going PCI-E if thats better. Is it necessary to change my CPU/mobo to see any noticiable results? Is it better to wait for newer technology? Do I just replace the GPU and add more RAM for now, and then replace the whole works in 6 or 8 months? As you can see, I'm pretty lost here.

So I pose this question to all you all-knowing posters out there. If you had my system....how would you upgrade it or would you start from scratch?

My system: Athlon 64 3000+ socket 754 (newcastle I believe) on a PCChips M860 motherboard(crap). 1Gb PC3200 RAM. 140Gb HDD (IDE). MSI FX5900XT graphics card. 450w power supply. Thermaltake TR2 M6 754/940 cpu fan. my case is pretty new and has 3 intake and 2 exhaust fans

I guess it depends on what I need to do. Less is obviously better. I'd like to stay under $700ish. I guess one of my questions should have been what's the best cheapest upgrade I can do

Fill in your specs at the top of the page called user cp
I would just get more memory and a better graphic card and wait for DX10 to come out

I actually prefer AMD over Intel

It would be better switching to a C2D build but it is more expensive, if you can afford it, I would go for it

So if I decided to go intel, which looks like the better way to go after scouring these threads, what would you suggest I buy? Or maybe its better to ask how much it would cost to get a good intel system build
