So i want to give dry ice a try....

Hey all, Decided i want to do something a little more exciting that water cooling so i was thinking dry ice, mostly because there is a place right down the road from my place that sells it, and from what i read its the cheapest of the extreme cooling?

I was thinking of starting out on socket 775 core 2 era setup. I was going to go this route because i can get some core 2 era hardware cheap so if i blow it up i wont be upset lol. Also if i remember correctly some of those chips overlock beastly. Ideally my goal (even if its not on this platform) id love to get a 100% overlock on a chip (even if only stable enough to cpu-z it)

I was reading the "Start Subzero Cooling for Under $200" thread and from that it looks like ill need the pot and some insulation (and of course the DICE) to get started

Is socket 775 a decent platform to start on? is there a good resource that might help me identify what boards and cpus are better to get? Any other tips/advice/whatever to get started would be appreciated. thumb.gif

I agree this is the best possible way to go about it. 775 boards and chips are very cheap and getting cheaper, and there are tons of them out there and I've yet to find a cold boot bug at dry ice temps with a 775 chip so they are great to learn on. You will need a pot but don't get too exotic, the one listed by Slaughter in the less than $200 subzero thread would work very well. Look at the insulation guides you see there and get some dry ice. And then enjoy!

Thanks guys, couple other hardware questions

First, RAM. Were there DDR3 775 boards or am i going to be looking at DDR2? How important is the RAM ill get for this. I ask because i know with my current cpu i can just raise the multi on the cpu and not even worry about ram. I imagine i can drop the multiplier on the ram as much as possible but if i start going crazy with FSB i imagine ill need some good RAM?

Second, Power supply. At least for now ill be doing cpu only so no gpu. But what am i going to need for a power supply? Will my Antec Basiq 350W be enough or shall i get something a bit better?

edit: K404 - What boards exactly do you suggest? if i type gigabyte DS4 i find many different variations, same with the Asus board

Rasparthe - off topic but nice case, i have that case for one of my other rigs as well thumb.gif

edit2: is there a good resource for what chips i should be on the lookout for? I know a lot of it is luck of the draw but maybe something to narrow it down a bit?

Hey!

As Rasparthe mentioned, I did post a link to a used pot in the "Start Subzero Cooling for Under $200" that I would highly recommend. I currently use a Duniek full aluminum pot and have had great results with s775.

As far as memory goes, I guess that depends on what your overall goal is. As I have intentions on trying to push everything (cpu, gpu, memory, etc) to the max, I picked up some of the highest spec'd ram I could in my price range. I picked up some 2133mhz DDR3 to ensure memory won't be an issue and I would have the ability to squeeze out as many points as I can out of benchmarks. I also went the DDR3 route as I didn't have any decent DDR2 and finding some is hard unless you are willing to spend a pretty penny on it. DDR3 is just more economical if you have to buy memory.

I would recommend picking up a bigger PSU as you will be putting a lot of stress on it. I had asked the same question and it was recommended that I pick up something in the 500-600w range especially if I was planning on incorporating a GPU as well.

Some decent boards to consider if you are going DDR3 are the Asus Rampage Extreme, Asus P5E3 Deluxe, Asus P5E3 WS Pro, and other variations. These are DDR3 boards. If you are looking at DDR2, then boards like the Asus P5K Pro or P5Q Pro or the Gigabyte EP45-UD3P are all solid performers. There are several other boards that are well suited for overclocking but from my research, these are the boards I went after.

Hopefully this helps a bit?! smile.gif

The majority of the 775 boards are going to be ddr2. There are a few ddr3 boards that are really good boards too.

If you just want something decent just look for a higher model of these chipsets

P35
p45
X38
X48

Boards that you can find easily would be a Giga EP45-ud3p. Someone is always selling one of those. It will be good for any c2d or c2q. It's no good for P4 or celerons. If you go with a ddr2 board, you want to find yourself some memory that uses D9's. Look here to help you find what you need. http://ramlist.i4memory.com/ddr2/

For a DDR3 board, once again, D9 will work or hypers.

DDR3 boards are much more rare. Anything asus that ends in 3, such as P5E3 Premium, P5Q3, P5K3, will all be DDr3. Giga boards are EP45T, the T denotes DDr3.

I'd also suggest a better psu.

Id lean towards a DDR3 board as ill be able to get it much cheaper/readily available but will i be missing out on any epic boards if i go that route?
Are there any awesome boards that stick out from the rest, or will i do pretty well if i get one of the top brand/boards regardless?

What series core 2's are my best bet. Im gonna nab a couple E2140/60's since i can get them really cheap (like $20 shipped) but of course we have the 4000,5000,6000,7000,8000 series as well, are there particular series i should stick within? I know its luck of the draw but thats a lot of damn chips lol

A better PSU is not a problem, but i figured id ask since i had the 350 lying around.

Think ill have to look into a good test bench as well as i imagine that will make things a lot easier to work on.

Sorry for the million questions, i just want to make sure i get started on the right foot with this. Really looking forward to it thumb.gif

Finding a DDR3 board is more difficult than finding a good ddr2 board. Finding DDR3 that goes well with one of those boards is no easier than finding some good ddr2.

Any and all core 2 chips will be good. Quads comes down to the board. Some boards work better with quads or are just much easier. Namely the ep45-ud3p. That is a good all around board. I'd say to just find one of those. It's the most common board that I see on the forums.

You don't need a bench. A motherboard box will be good enough.

Even though DDR3 is readily sold still its hard to find DDR3 that will go well with one of these boards?
