24bit/192 kHz music makes no sense

Thread Starter
Here's the article. Took the wind right out of my sails for a push for 'higher quality music'. So I did my own research on it, as well as my own ABX tests. And as it turns out, it's correct; 24 bit 96/192 kHz music is no higher quality for our ears than what a CD already offers us. This in info any audiophile or digital music lover should know, especially when selecting DAQ equipment, software, and digital source media.

Summing this article: Oversampling beyond the Nyquist frequency is pointless. Not only can humans not tell the difference, it makes a much larger file for no reason. Energy used to make music sound better is best applied to perfecting the master and avoiding the dB war of many poor versions of music.

The only reason I know of that has made 192KHz popular is because that's the sample rate of lossless Blu-Ray audio. Going from Dolby/DTS on DVD to lossless Blu-Ray was a huge jump in quality. Going from Dolby/DTS to 16-bit, 44KHz is a big jump; going from 16-bit 44KHz to 24-bit 48KHz is a big jump; going from 24-bit 48KHz to 24-bit 96KHz or 192KHz is hardly if at all noticeable.

It's also true that in some of my over-sampled music I can hear really high pitches (20+kHz) that I'd actually rather NOT here. anything above the 44.1/48 kHz range is something my still-young ears can here, but still don't like. I would venture to say it almost makes the music listening experience worse

Get headphones that aren't bright and shrilly. That's your problem at this point.

Who said anything about headphones?

Also, 96 kHz doesn't make sense any more than 192 kHz. I'm not sure where you got this opinion, but i'd love to see the scientific or logical back-up for it.

Because it allows you to hear INTO THE FUTURE.

Think about it.

Plus, we all want to hear Mariah Carey's voice which clearly echo's up to 50khz which can be recorded by an Earthworks mic, so you need 96khz bro.

i think bit depth is (relatively speaking) more important here

then as you say, garbage in garbage out.

but there is another angle, if you take the effective resolution of CD vs Vinyl then in theory CD should sound better, but in actual fact a good Vinyl setup has more air, focus, clarity and rhythm than most any digital ive listened too. Its only bass where digital seems to win for me.

Audio Myths Workshop

http://www.audioholics.com/education/audio-formats-technology/dynamic-comparison-of-lps-vs-cds-part-4

http://www.ethanwiner.com/bitstest.html - blind test time.

16 bit, 44.1 kHz is plenty for music playback when used properly. The difference is that a lot of LP / vinyl releases have greater audible dynamic range / less dynamic range compression (that's well within the 44.1 kHz sampling rate) and thus the audible difference but this has nothing to do with the medium it is on.

All things equal, digital is a vastly superior format.

All my recordings are of the past, doesn't that mean mean they're fine below 96KHz? And who wants echo? My room will add that.
