How nVidia names their GPUs...

Thread Starter
Probably dumb questions, and I think I already know the answer, but just to verify...

My basic question: eVGA 6200 LE or nVidia 5950 Ultra, which is better [for gaming]?

Underlying question: When nVidia releases a new series of GPU, would the highest end of the previous series be comparable or better to the earliest of the next series?

i.e.:

7950GX2 v 8800GTX

6800GS v 7300SE

5950 Ultra v 6200LE

Or does it vary on a case-by-case basis? Theoretically, if you took a 7-series and 8-series with EXACTLY the same specs (core clock, memory clock, memory size, etc), what would the performance difference be?

I can say with confidence that one of the more important reasons why a 6 series is worse than a 7 series, or why an 8 is better than a 7 series is the features that come with the new generations of cards. The 8800GTX(S) sports DX10, but in general there are obvious benefits for the next generation. (and you will pay alot of $$ for those new features, i.e. the $650 8800GTX)

Edit - to further answer your question,

im almost absolutely sure a 6800GT or 6800 ultra would whoop a 7300, but there is less of the new technology in it.(someone check me on that)

and for the 6200 vs the 5950, link to the actual comparison of cards (thanks to ckp64)

There is no obvious pattern, but use this site to compare different cards:

The 6200 LE would get bent over by the 5950U unless its a Direct X 9.0 game only.

So basically, no you cant really compare them. Each generation is like a replacement series for the other generation, you get your high and and low end, low end next gen isnt likely to beat high end last gen.

There is somewhat of a pattern.

Usually the very best from last generation is about midgrade in the current generation.

For example:

well the LE will get walked by the 5950 U. But, it's not that bad really....maybe if it was a regular 6200 it'd be closer...

I dono. Just keep yours.
