Now, Capstone Analyst Rory Maher reports that "people close to the situation in Kansas City" say Google Fiber is moving beyond Kansas City.
Specifically, the sources tell Maher "Google has made it clear more cities will likely be bidding for Fiber soon.

Yes! Wait... wouldn't this be a monopoly if they also controlled how we got on the internet too? Google would be huge....

I don't see a problem with that. Lots of companies provide both cable and internet access (for example, Comcast). If I could get Google to provide my TV and internet, I'd switch in a heartbeat.

I wouldn't find it to be a monopoly at all; if anything Comcast and AT&T are an oligopoly and Google are just stimulating competition.

I'm looking forward to the expansion immensely, and that thought just popped into my mind. Not only are they one of the biggest internet companies, they would become one of the biggest providers too.

It would be insane to have that type of speed.

I just hope that they plan on expanding in multiple states/cities simultaneously. It took way too long to get up and running in KC; hopefully its success will encourage them to accelerate expansion. It's kind of annoying that ONE particular city in the US has access to such an amazing service at that price!

What exactly is the price/speeds google offers?

^While in one way I agree with you. In that OCN as a general rule doesn't like Apple.

On the other hand....

Apple doesn't offer me any huge innovation. Google though. Is offering 1Gigabit a sec internet for $70 USD. A month. That is an awesome price, and an unrivaled speed. Apple can't offer that to me. That's not any irony.

EDIT: I would literally go door to door and advertise it for free if they expanded here.
So long as they go through Columbus, I think that would be a great idea

There's actually a lot of dark fiber in Ohio, including a number of runs around I-270 and up and down I-71.

Please come to Minnesota! Mid continent and Comcast are killing us up here with crappy speeds for premium prices!

Thread cleaned.....AGAIN.

Keep Apple out of this thread. This thread has NOTHING to do with Apple, Apple doesn't host as an ISP. So that comparison makes zero sense at all.

I like that Google is pushing for an increased speed standard in the US. I hope they succeed and push other providers to spend the necessary money to overhaul their networks.

My guess is that this won't happen. People who don't need speed would be excited about the 5/1. And people that want faster than that are probably willing to pay $70 a month to score 1000/1000 without a cap.

Including a middle plan would just take away from people paying $70. Can you really imagine a 500/500 for $40/month without a cap? I can see the people willing to pay $70 at that point shrinking to 0.

It would only become a monopoly if Google was the only provider. As long as there are still other companies offering the same services its not a monopoly.
Yea people forget what a monopoly is. Monopolistic competition would be the correct term for Google here. They're acting "like" a monopoly, but they have other competitors so they are not a monopoly at all. Is it Google's fault that the majority of the United States population is in desperate desire of faster internet connections, no data caps, and better prices? If anything Comcast and AT&T are the oligopoly (collection of monopolies) controlling the market's prices and overcharging just because they're the only options in many areas; Google would only be stimulating competition between them by offering better prices and forcing them to offer prices and speeds that are more fair to the customers. Cable was deregulated long ago, yet it is still a pretty price-fixed market. The prices have actually risen since deregulation.

I know you were saying it in light humor, but that makes no sense... it's not like they're going to physically come to your house and install a camera inside the TV you already own; they're not selling nor giving you any TVs. All they'd really get on you is what channels/what genre movies/shows you watch, and maybe stream you advertisements that relate to your geographical location and channel interests. If you're always watching the Speed Network, perhaps they'd show you more car commercials, for example.
