FX-4170 Can't run Borderlands 2?

Thread Starter
Just upgraded from a Phenom II X2 to the FX4170, and all was well until i tried to run Borderlands 2, at which point ntoskrnl crashed and rebooted my PC. After much troubleshooting, I swapped the Phenom II back in and the game started up flawlessly.

Any other FX-4170 owners experience this same issue?

(For the record i really wanted the Phenom II X4 980BE, but they DCed it before i could snatch one up...)

IIRC you need a BIOS update to run FX chips with BL2

"Initially, we couldn't get Borderlands 2 to run with the AMD's FX processors as the game would cause our test system to throw a BSOD on loading. Turns out, the Asrock motherboard we were using -- as well as most AMD 900-series motherboards for that matter -- need a BIOS update to correct this issue.

With the updated BIOS installed, the BSOD disappeared and we were able to test the FX chips."

I actually had to update my BIOS anyways to use the new chip, and i went ahead and updated the the most recent for my board, so from what it sounds like, i may just have to get a new board if i want to run BL2 with my new FX chip.

Thanks for the info.

I really hope AMD comes through with Piledriver. They really let me down when they discontinued the 980BE

If you have a Rev 2.0, 2.2, or 3.0

The Gigabyte GA-870A-UD3 is not a AM3+ compatible board. There is no bios update to let you use the FX on your board.

Only the Rev 3.1 will accept a FX

Correct.

Below 3.1:

Rev 3.1:

Yep, unless your Rev 3.1 its only up to Thuban X6 Support for you. And you'd need to return that CPU asap. Look around for a used 960, its the best bargain on the market that will be drop in compatible for you, and gives you a chance at 5-6 cores. You get a slight increase in OC over Deneb on average and better IMC.

If Fuell is correct, then you are lucky that you even managed to run the FX cpu on your AM3 board.
some cpus with similar sockets will run but it will be unstable if the board doesnt really support it.

I ran an intel E5300 on an ancient LGA775 board that can only support Pentium D. The E5300 runs fine except its like half of its actual speed. The clockspeed is correct but the slowed speed is very noticeable compared to when I ran it on a motherboard that supported it.

You will have to get an AM3+ motherboard to use your FX 4170 without problems

That is an inaccurate statement, as i did infact update to 3.1, and ran with the FX4170.

The problem was not my board recognizing the chip, but rather my computer rebooting upon running Borderlands 2.

I personally havent decided if im going to replace my Phenom 555 with a 965, or wait for Piledriver.

That sounds accurate, it did run but there were definitely some noticeable compatibility issues.
I decided to RMA the 4170, and i will either replace it with a 965 or something else for my PC, since my 555 is actually running Borderlands 2 at near max settings.

How did you upgrade a board revision?
