How to get dirt cheap Mesh Panels

Thread Starter
It's no secret that mesh panels (specially the ones with very small holes, >3mm) are pretty expensive and/or hard to find anywhere.
Today, while heating up my lunch after arriving from prep course, I paid attention to my microwave for no reason whatsoever and saw THIS!

I don't know why I haven't realized that before, as I use my microwave every f. day.

So after eating, i went to 'a place where they get those kind of stuff fixed' (don't know what is the name of this place in english tongue.gif) and asked if they got some doors from broken or old microwaves, but unfortunately (for me) they had already given the unused spare parts to those guys who gather and sell recycling materials for living. After a little thinking, i went to the local scrapyard and found a whole bunch of broken microwaves biggrin.gif and bought 5 doors for 4 reais (~2 US dollars)

Sorry for the lack of pics, but what you basically do with the doors, is to peel off the plastic on the back and cut out the mesh panel:

the plastic is well glued, but you just need apply pressure in one of the edges with a flat screwdriver and peel of the plastic with your fingers

they all got 1mm holes as far as I know and they look very sexy upsidedwnsmiley.gif

Very creative use of recycling. I was at a recycling place a few months back and noticed that they have all kinds of interesting extrusions and other bits in a bin. I am certainly thinking of going back to see what they've got once in a while.

That mesh looks sweet. Much more "meshier" than the usual mesh which restricts airflow too much.

Here's one for you... trash cans from IKEA. The wire mesh looking ones. I've got a couple stashed away for use as modding mesh. They have since modified their mesh trash cans so there's a bunch of round indentations, but that could be useful for fan grilles too. Pretty good amount of materials for $3.99. http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/80153254/

that's pretty creative, how long ago was this, not sure weather or not they are still carrying them.

found them online still!

price went up though, or maybe that is just because it is in canada?

Dollar store trash cans are also a good source of steel mesh if an Ikea is not accessible. thumb.gif

I quoted in USD. Not sure what the price is in funny money, but would be a bit higher, yes.
