the Pentium D .. which is dual core .. you have two core processors on one die.. so yes you have to p4 cpus.. but only one chip.. its kinda like hyperthreading but its real not virtual

Ahhh, okay was wondering what was up with that. So it's not really true dual core, like the Core 2 Duo.

How much performance would I actually gain if I upgraded to an entry level or mid level Core 2 Duo?

well a e6400 which clocks in at 2.13ghz will out perform your pentium d in most real world situations. But the beauty of the core 2 duos is that most of them will overclock well beyond 3ghz, which would be equivalent to a pentium d overclocked to 6ghz. So I say if you do manage to get the money upgrade to an Asus P5B-E, which is about $120USD, or a P5B deluxe if you can afford it. Along with either an E6300 or E6400. I'd personally go with the E6400 because of the higher multi and being only 30 dollars more.

you 4ghz P-D is somewhere between E6300 and E6400 in performence. The lower bus might make some difference though.

So basically your system is very very up to date and strong.
Only difference is, like the one above me said, that if you overclock the E6300/E6400 you can get extremely high clock speed, which will kill any Pentium based processor. The amazingly high FSBs(400+) will also make a big difference I believe.

I feel you, since I'm in the same case. I bought my rig a few months ago because I was very tight in budget. for an extra 100$ I could have bought an E6300, and a board that will overclock OK(but not too well).
But like I said, I was very very tight in budget.

It's a passable CPU. You could have chosen a little more wisely but you aren't screwed or anything. In reality you'll never be bottlenecked by anything at 12x10 resolution. It's a good balance of speed between your CPU and GFX for that res. However, that CPU sucks down power like frat boy does a beer bong. The Conroes are great but right now only the greatest of SLI, xfire and 8800's can take advantage of their abilities at any reasonable resolution (16x12 and up)

Hmm well I think I can survive another 6 months or so with what I have now, and then I'll upgrade to a more powerful Core 2 Duo. But I should defiantly get more RAM ASAP, because you can really feel it in the load times if you don't.

No, it is true dual core. Your computer still kicks pretty hard.....but that 1gb of ram might hold you back in the near future.

How long ago did you buy this computer? Did you build it yourself? Next time you should ask for advice, BEFORE buying

um yes it is truly dual core.. it has two physical cores built onto one die.. in other words its two cpus that use the same socket

Which PD do you have? Is it a 945, 950, 805? You might be able to OC that cpu much higher. I have the same mobo and a 950 and have hit 5.15GHZ on mine. I sit everyday for gaming and such at 4.76GHZ. You have a nice rig, so don't be quick to jump. You probably could stand to add another gig of ram. 1GB for Bf2 is very light. You will see a dramatic increase in performance with 2GB.
