Bent Radiator Fin Fix

Thread Starter
I haven't seen this topic brought up too much in my brief period with watercooling and thought it might be helpful for some to share my limited experience and get others experiences reguarding this frequent occurance.
In the past few weeks I have bought several used radiators and all have had fin damage to one degree or another. I have read that fin damage doesn't really effect performance, but any impedence to air flowing through the fins has to decrease perfomance in some way. It is also a horrible eyesore if your rads are visible. It bothers me just to know that they are there.
Being somewhat handy and having ocd, I have repaired all of the fin damage to 4 different radiators with a common household item. Tweezers. They are perfect to fit in between the fins and flat so that you can us the good part of the fin to realign the damaged part. With some patience and attention to detail, most fins can be repaired. The only thing that I have found that cannot be completely fixed, is when the fins are broken from the water cooling channel or ripped in some way and seems to happen when the damage is beyond 1/8" deep. I'm wondering what other people have done or tried to do to fix this problem and what "tools" have been used, successfully or unsuccessfully, to repair fins or other damage to radiators in general. I'm sure there are al lot of people who have some interesting stories about this!

i would think there is a rad fin comb out there??? i know i have used them for my cars and m/c's , the m/c comb was a different comb due to the smaller fins.

Car and motorcycle fins are straight, whereas computer cooling radiator fins zig-zag back and forth. You aren't able to just pull down with a comb and straighten them, you have to pay attention to each one individually. Now using some sort of comb like object to push through the opposite side of the bent fins, seems like a viable solution. 55 views and only one comment, come on people!

That's not correct. Folding is pretty common in auto rads.

My dad has one but, they don't work well or at all when the fins are arranged/contoured in/to the wave or even folded design.

Use a pair of tooth picks.....one on each side of the fin an roll,, also you can go through the back side (if fin is folded completely) and push them back out..also being (bamboo) or just wood it doesn't damage the finish on the rad...If it does get some black nail polish in either Gloss,Matte or Satin, then get some remover (for thinners) and repaint... Job done.

I just use the wifes tweezers. I eventually got my own sent of long tip tweezers. Squeeze squeeze, no problem and the woman won't get annoyed that you took hers lol.

I stand corrected. I thought air conditioner radiators were the same as autos.

ooops, yeah i forgot all about the zigzaggin in pc rads vs, auto/mc rads. welll last night i had one of my rads apart so i could fasten it to the case and there were a few bent fins, i used some pointed thin tweezers to bend back in place. i could se where that could become time consuming if a lot of them were bent. i'm not sure what else to use atm.
