It only sad when a guard tells you can't go upstairs and you try to find out that you can't really go up the stairs to invisible wall.

To be honest. Even with hints people seem to fail. Black Mesa mod is a prime example. Crouch Jumping was hinted to you in the very beginning of the game, yet tons of people had to ask how to get to certain spots because they weren't crouch jumping...

Probably a bit of poor design there as well. Crouch-jumping as a mechanic is pretty redundant, just an extra keystroke for "jump marginally higher", might as well make that the normal jump height and leave crouching for... crouching.

But that's the whole point of beta testing anyway, you figure out what parts of the game aren't as intuitive and give hints/help (or even rework the mechanics) so that players don't get stuck. Even if most players don't need a hint, what's an acceptable portion of your player base that hates your game because they couldn't finish it?

Crouch jumping exists for more than simply jumping higher, it also allows you to fit in smaller spaces and to add difficulty to an otherwise mindlessly easy activity. Pretty sure you just fell into the category of people who need hints when playing games before responding to posts.

Crouch jumping is a terrible mechanic though.

Something like what 50% of people don't finish games they buy on average? Unfortunately people like us who are really into games are a very small minority. I still have a lot of faith in Dishonored though. Heck I'd check it out for the art style alone.

I love Far Cry 2. I am currently playing at the hardest difficulty and I am enjoying it. This game makes you think about the tactics. At first I wanted to punch my monitor because my ass got kicked so easily, but then I just started to develop my own tactics to kill the enemies more efficiently. Yes, there are some things that I don't like (outposts respawn too quickly, some type of missions are all the same), but the gameplay is very good. thumb.gif

No one is making you guys buy games like MGS where the gameplay is fantastic but the storyline is so convoluted as to not be worth keeping up with, or Gears of War where it's just point and shoot. Where were you guys for Deus Ex recent releases, STALKER series, or Heavy Rain? Those are the 3 that come to mind in the 30 seconds I think about it...I'm sure more would if I bothered. The games are there.

Crouch jumping was in Half-Life though, and Black Mesa Source team wanted to keep Half-Life gameplay close to the original on a newer engine. That is like getting rid of rocket jumping from Quake or TF2 (and double jumping). There is the risk of streamlining games too far like with FF13 (imho), where you just press up and x button the whole entire game.

I wish someone would release a game, like in the old days, that require thinking and didn't tell you where to go....

Anyone else remember playing the old school RPG's that would say "Go North, save the damsel" , you then look North and realize your journey started at the most Southern point on the map, and the entire game world is North? Yea....the good old days. Having to speak with every NPC in order to gain some insight on the next step, exploring the world map looking for the next cave you have to go too....

No arrows and painted lines in those days.
