Grabbed one of these for my in law's build along with the free 8gb of mem on select MBs from Newegg a while back. Super budget build! Great deal if you ask me. By the way the ram deal is back on at the egg.

that motherboard has a 4+1 power phase design, and the vrms arent heatsinked, but if you arent overclocking, then you would be fine. if you are overclocking, i would get some heatsinks for those vrms. since it is a 4+1 power phase design, i wouldnt expect too much room for overclocking though.

Dip down to these Crucial Ballistix sticks and save a few bucks, and if your not overclocking, you could save some too by downgrading to this board. Don't worry if it's MSI, at stock clocks it's perfectly stable, I have a 785 m-ATX board that ran a 955 just fine. thumb.gif

Just a suggestion! Darn that's a great price, when I got my 956 it was more then double frown.gif

By that logic, my Asus board going out means nobody should ever buy Asus. MSI had trouble in the past, but have improved greatly. A stock 955 on 4+1, even unsinked, is fine. If you do get a short, it's because it's either a bad board, you have horrible cooling or the board is pushing too much volts on it's own (auto overclocking or not running the proper speeds and voltages at default).

Just because MSI has VRM problems, doesn't mean you should NEVER buy them.

The motherboard is just fine as long as he doesnt do any crazy overclocking, even if he does fry is its under warranty, i say go for it if you are going to stick to stock clocks or maybe even just a slight overclock. You will be fine. If you dont mind a refurbished board with a warranty this would be what i would get http://www.geeks.com/details.asp?invtid=M4A79XTD-EVO-BO-R&cat=MBB

+ RAM
I'm just trying to upgrade.

Order your RAM somewhere else. A far better quality DDR3-1600 can be had for much less than this generic kit - as much as $5-7 less given there is no free shipping offer with this RAM.

Be careful about that 880GM-D2H. Ensure with TOP MOST PRIORITY that you get a rev 3.1. If TigerDirect hands you anything other than a rev 3.1, it is a 3+1 power phase and does not have 125W TDP support - your board and processor will be unusable together.

Run... run away. Run far away. Come back with a huge metal shield and a fire extinguisher.

All seriousness, your board suggestion... MSI is aware of their VRM problems, and places warnings on their failure-prone board pages including this one.  MSI rates this board at max 95W TDP, so it won't even function with the 125W TDP 955 and if you try it I think it be a given you come to an explosion if you attempt to place any load on it. Not cool, man. thumbsdownsmileyanim.gif

Even the latest 970A-G46 is facing VRM failure incidents.
