Finally jumping in to WC *Update Changes*

Thread Starter
Hey OCN I made a thread a few months ago asking for some WC tips, since then I put WC on hold but the month's almost done and I'm going to be picking up a new PC case and Kit in a week or so. I'm pretty dead set on the Fractal Design Mini as for Watercooling I'm up for recommendations. I've been looking at the Raystorm and the XSPC kits, not sure which to jump on. I don't want to spend more than $260 on the kit if possible. You guys think you can help me out?

tl;dr - I'm picking up the Fractal Design Mini with a WC kit in a week, which should I get? Less then $260 for WC kit and accessories, also has to be 240mm.

Thanks guys!

Hey guys instead of creating another thread I thought I'd just ask for help on this one. I've decided to go with the Silverstone TJ08-E, I need help putting a custom loop together for around $200.

This is what's in my cart right now.
-Though I still need a res and a pump, I'm going to wait out on buying a 120mm radiator to keep costs down and buy one next paycheck. Also the fittings came out to be quite expensive, any alternative? I'd also like to watercool my GPU in the future, just keep that in mind. Again thanks guys.

Raystorm has been outstanding for me. Got my 3930k up to 5.1ghz with P95 temps in high 60c. Go with the kit with the D5 pump, very reliable. http://www.performance-pcs.com/catalog/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=59_202_972&products_id=33588

I agree with Swolern. The D5 Raystorm kit is an excellent starter kit, and unlike a lot of starter kits, you can actually get excellent temp (from a watercooler's prespective) from this kit.

Although I must warn you, the D5 on the bay res for me got loud on any speed setting higher than 1.5. No kidding. The vibration from the pump radiated onto the res, and then the entire case was humming from vibration.

You really need to look into purchasing some anti-vibration screws or at least stick some anti-vibration foam in the drive bays to mitigate some of that vibration.

Thanks for the link, I'm going to be purchasing this one. Though I have a few questions; What fitting size should I use? How's the tubing that comes with the kit? I have 4 GT AP15's will I need anything else? Coolant?

Fittings are a matter or preference, the flow and performance will be about the same. I choose the 7/16 x 5/8, the bigger fittings and tubings looked way to big/fat for me. You can look at my rig in my sig to see tubing size. You can look at other peoples pics of water loops to compare. Good thing about this kit is you just pick what size fittings you want and the company will give you the correct tubing to fit them. And for beginners compression fittings are highly recommended!

I use the HighFlex tubing and it has been great with no problems. The other choice in the kit is the Primoflex and I have heard a few negative feedback on them.

You know the kit comes with fans also. But the AP15s will be a little quieter. I got the included XSPC 2000rpm for the performance.

I have talked to many WC experts and they tell me dont use color/UV additives, it will end up clogging up your loop in the long run. Just buy some $1 Gallon Distilled Water from the grocery store and drop your free Silver Kills Coils(you get with the kit) in there and your good.

If you are just cooling your CPU nothing else is needed.

okay hows this?
jHqcB.png

I went with the 1/2 fittings because I like the bigger tubes, I also went with the Red primo tubing because well it's red haha. If it's actually really bad I'll switch them out, I'm going to also purchasing some Thermal Paste while I'm at it. This all fine? I also have a few more WC questions, How hard is it to install? I've watched a few videos on it and all of them are different what's a great step by step? I'm quite nervous about leaking, How screwed am I if it does? Do you have anymore useful tip that might be helpful? Thank you so much for helping a noobie out!

Looks good. You know there is thermal paste that comes with the kit you are looking at. Not too hard to install. Just take you time and double check everything. Build your loop inside case. Remove loop from case and put loop together outside of case. Leak test for an hour. Check every connection for the tiniest leak or moisture. After verified there is no leak, drain then put back together in case. I test one last time in case with ALL power connections undone except pump & fans. There is a bypass connection plug that comes in the Raystorm kit that lets you power the water loop only, without having any power going to motherboard and components. If you get water on your components with no power nothing will happen to them just dry them out. Components with just one power plug connected to it can fry the electronics. The XSPC compression fittings are great. As long as you put them on correctly they will not leak.
