Throttling with low temps?

Thread Starter
Hi guys.

It seems that at times, when encoding, my CPU throttles. My temps are great - 45c full load(and the sensor isn't lying). So why is my CPU throttling? what other reasons could cause this?

If I disable TM2 then the throttling stops of course.

How you know the sensor does not lie? Those temps should be around 55C at least with that cooler and clock speed. Did you measure the temps with a probe or something?

I do suspect a faulty sensor to be honest. What's the temp in BIOS?

The other possibility is that your rig has speedstep enabled (not sure your BIOS has that option, it's more common on laptops).... However, this should not kick in since the CPU has a load.

I've been working with this machine for several months now. With stock cooling I've reached 60c+ and didn't encounter throttling. It's the same sensor and it's showing 45c thanks to the freezer 7 pro and good airflow. So there's no real way that the temp is causing the throttling.

There's no speedstep option in the 805. so it's not it either.

EDIT: I also believe that throttling relies on the sensor... or am I wrong here?

Throttling most definely relies on the sensor.

Not at all! It's normal(not too hot and not too cold).

I don't get it..

Something is defiantly weird if you have had the CPU to 60c on the stock cooler and it didn't throttle, and now it is throttling at 45c......that makes no sense....

I would set your BIOS to default (reset the CMOS) and see if it throttles then.....if not, then maybe you tweaked something wrong in the BIOS. If it still does it, well, I'm not sure.....but it defiantly seems odd.....

Could it be that some other component is causing the slow down (faulty RAM? Overheating RAM sticks? Maybe a HDD that's starting to fail?) In what phase of the encoding process does this happen? At a specific point, or random?

Maybe the 1GB RAM is not enough, and at some point the encoding process hits the page file, causing a slow down.

Now, I am just guessing here

Thanks guys. I checked with dual prime95 and I also throttle there I'm afraid.

I noticed that this only occurs on high vcores. I.E: 1.55v-1.6v(there's a serious vdroop so this is actually 1.45-1.5v).
If I lower the vcore to around 1.45v I get no throttling at all. But I'm not really stable that way.

The temps are FINE. with the lower vcore they're more like 40-43. with the high vcore they're like 45-49c. So that still doesn't explain why this is happening.

So it's not because of any other component I guess. Maybe it's because using the higher voltage option means exceeding the allowed 1.25v-1.4v for the 805? But if this is the case - why does it only throttle on full load, and not on idle as well?
