First Build - Budget Gaming System - Page 2

nice rig, but i would buy a 692 (might be bias since i have one, but looks better and sleeker imo) instead of the haf912, and would go for a 7950 and a Z77 Extreme4, since for overclockability with a 212 evo, you probably will get the near same values. oh also, dont get a 5400rpm hard drive when you can get 7200. also gimme 2 mins, i will post what i would change if i were buying it for myself.

nvm the case, a source 210 is cheaper and is good too. also $20-30 cheaper compared to 692.

He ordered this stuff last night - so I think the window of opportunity for making changes to the order may well be over by now.

I didn't notice he had selected a 5400 RPM hard drive though that is a nice catch, the 7200 RPM models would be a little faster. On the other hand if he buys an SSD in a month or two it doesn't really matter how quick his storage drive is. Edit: Also I've been using a green 5400 RPM hard drive for some time now and it really hasn't made an obvious difference to me, I didn't even realize it till just now......

He already switched to a 7950....

As for the motherboard I agree he could have gotten one for about half the price probably without sacrificing much OC, but the one he got is pretty sweet....... wink.gif

Hey!

I actually made some changes to the order this morning before seeing the feedback biggrin.gif

Here's the updated rig

It's set me 100$ over budget, but I've got the headroom for it.

The main changes you'll see are the 690II Advanced Case and the H100 cooler. I figured the H100 will allow me to get the most out of the processor without worries. I ended up going with the 690II case mainly because the fan space up top was designed to incorporate a 240mm rad, so it just made sense. Notwithstanding the fact that cable management will be easier with the bigger 690II.

Otherwise, I switched PSUs again, opting for the modular TX750m rather than the regular TX750. For $10, it'll be much tidier smile.gif

It's funny how much you can want to change components around in such a short period of time! It's not like I hadn't though this through beforehand and yet I'm still making changes to the order tongue.gif Glad I decided to buy over the weekend!

Thanks for the parts suggestions anyways! I had been debating getting the Extreme4 over the Sabertooth, but the 5yr warranty, extra fan cooling and overall cool look did it for me tongue.gif But I might've been able to save a $50-100 by going with a smaller PSU and Extreme4 (or even Gibabyte's G77x-UD3H for that matter). However with the extra cooling from the H100 and higher fan capability of the 690II case, I felt going with a 750w PSU would give me the headroom to throw anything at it and still have room for a second 7950 without worries should I decide to do so in the future.

Looking forward to the build!

So, first actual update - Realized my hard drive was the only thing not being ordered from DirectCanada so I decided to go ahead and cancel the order on the 5400rpm since I could get a 7200 rpm hard drive from DirectCanada and have it all shipped together, hence saving on shipping fees.

I received an email from ComputerValley.ca (with whom I had placed the original order for the 5400 rpm HDD) stating that they could not cancel it because the order was already processed and would ship tomorrow morning.

...So you can't cancel an order because the item is sitting on a shelf and won't be shipped until tomorrow?

Am I alone in thinking that just doesn't seem right?

Not every site offers good customer service.... plenty of places are happy to have your money, but once they have it they're not going to send it back. Honestly you are lucky the other sites you've been working with are so flexible - hopefully this will lead you to avoid that retailer for future purchases.

man, dont worry. you can sell it here or on another forum, or you can just use it, then later on buy a SSD. also, for time 7200rpm will be faster since its more than 5400, but real life it will create like 5-10sec delays compared to the 7200. no problem there, but its just not so smart not to cancel a order. especially you can change your bmw's specs until it gets into production (3 weeks after you order from dealer iirc) if a company can cancel/edit orders for $40k+ items, canceling a $90 drive shouldnt be too hard mad.gif

Yeah, I'm not too worried about it or anything, worst comes to worst, I'll just return the drive and be charged a 10% fee or something.

What really grinds me is the fact that i ordered a 7200 rpm Barracuda AND a 128gb Crucial M4 SSD from DirectCanada for only $170 while thinking I'd be able to cancel the $108 order on the 5400 rpm HDD from ComputerValley - which would have only meant a +$60 upgrade. Now it's a +$170 upgrade -_-'

The way they explained it to me is that the order was sent to their warehouse where they now have no way of identifying the package until UPS scans it on pickup tomorrow. I understand it being more difficult to stop the order now that it's in their warehouse, but I still call BS on not being able to identify their packages.
It makes more sense if you've ever been in the back of one of those places - it's already been packaged+labeled and is now sitting in a *potentially* massive stack of boxes all set to be picked up by UPS tomorrow. Although they could probably find it with enough time, sorting through a very large pile of outgoing shipments would be a pretty crappy job to get stuck with.
