Weird Noise

Plugged a used 550W Antec TruePower 2.0 into my old motherboard (ASUS P5LP-LE/HP Limestone-GL8E) and started getting a weird noise as soon as I flipped the PSU to ON. When I power on the system the noise stops. When I power the system off the noise starts. Any ideas?

That sounds like a very upset coil, while not indicative of an imminent failure... that's an old unit (6-7 years by now) and a pretty poor one to begin with.... you should probably retire it.

The sound appears to be coming from the motherboard directly. I tried the same PSU on another motherboard and there is only a faint coil whine. Could the 550W be too much for the capacitors on my old ASUS P5LP-LE/HP Limestone-GL8E? I checked all the capacitors and only one has a slight budge, indicating capacitor plague.

Impossible to tell without some actual measurements (ripple measurements).... are those motherboards making the same noise with other PSUs?

Can you do me a favor, don't connect the psu to the mobo and and other peripherals that's connected, please disconnect them.

Do the paper clip test by placing a paper clip on the green and black connectors on the 24 pin connector and turn on the power supply. The power supply fan should spin and let me know if the noise is coming from the power supply. That whining high pitch noise sounds like the failing capacitor.

Keep me informed on this.
