That is easier said than done. I would even go as far as to say that you would have better probability of success taking out military-industrial complex than the current patent system, considering the strength of the lobbyists on the payroll of these companies being interested in maintaining and extending the current system, starting with Disney and Apple all the way to the Medical Industry and beyond.

Patents are a government privilege. All that would have to be done is close the patent office.

That is actually incredibly false. Many industries are exempt from patent protection, yet thrive regardless.

Ever notice how grocery stores have dozens of knock off cereals? The whole "business is impossible without patents" line is bogus.

This is very true, without patents we'd end up with tons and tons of knock-offs like in China.

Ever notice how grocery stores have dozens of knock off cereals? Cereals don't get patent protection, yet General Mills exists.
The whole "business is impossible without patents" line is bogus.

The car industry would have gigantic probs, the furniture, consumer electronics, the clothing industry just because some chinese people would be allowed to sell their knock-off goods in the US or europe. General mills is something else, there people buy it because it's only around 1$ more, while with knock-off cars people are happy if they can buy one which looks like a BMW but only cost 20'000$ instead of 120'000$.

Sorry. Car designs are another thing that aren't patentable.

So in some ways we already in your patent-free nightmare world, and turns out.... its not that bad.

What are you talking car designs aren't patentable? BMW sued a chinese company for selling a car in China because BMW had a patent.

Edit: Check out the first point in this rather weird article:

That doesn't make any sense.
Most companies go bust already, but we don't hear about it cause it's not news.
If there weren't any patents, then the companies with the BEST products were survive. Not the companies that had the first products. Wouldn't that provide MORE motivation for companies to innovate to try to be better than the rest? As it is now, a company gets a patent, and they sit on what they have, they don't try to improve it as long as they keep winning lawsuits. Ultimately it's the consumers that suffer with higher prices, less selection and poorer quality. It's just like the light-bulb conspiracy.

Well if you live in the US than yes you have to suffer with less selection. But if for example an italian luxury furniture designer gets copied by some chinese then they're done for. Then anyone could buy a knock-off luxury table in walmart.
