Only question is about the GPU and that is is there anything from AMD that is faster/cheaper OR BOTH!biggrin.gif. And the HDD is maybe a concern being refurbished!
ARIANET Synergy Black Midi Tower Case w/ 450W Power Supply.
ASUS M5A78L-M LX V2 AMD 760G (Socket AM3+) DDR3 PCI-Express Motherboard.

Corsair XMS3 4GB DDR3 1600 MHz CAS 9 XMP Dual Channel Desktop Memory.

AMD Phenom II X4 Quad Core 965 Black Edition 125W 3.40GHz C3 (Socket AM3) Processor.

Samsung SH-S222BB/BEBE DVD Writer.

160GB Arianet 3.5" SATA II Hard Drive - HDD - Refurbished.

ARIANET GeForce GT 630 1024MB GDDR3 PCI-Express Graphics Card.
£235.16. Prefer the idea of a discrete GPU really.
Thanx.

Do NOT go in for these online bundle deals as they are ripoffs with terribly unbalanced components.

The 965 with that board? In essence its rated for 95W chips and the 965 is 125w. You might run into throttling issues on full load, thus compromising performance.

The power supply is probably local junk with peak power nowhere close to its rated wattage.

I bet I could come up with a better build for the same price. An APU will serve you better in this case and you could always hybrid Crossfire down the road. A much better option than an overpriced GT630.

(Phew!) Good job you spotted that a quick look on ASUS's site and sure enough 95w is the max. I stupidly thought it would support ALL CPU's that would fit in the socket.redface.gif The APU while it sounds nice to be honest i have NO experience with either AMD GPU's or these APU's so i'm having difficulty imagining the closest Nvidia discrete GPU to compare it to. In this house we have:

My rig.
s939 x2 4400+ 2gb DDR & 8800GT.
sAM2 x2 4200+ 2gb DDR2 & 9600GT.

The nipper is playing Sleeping Dogs now on the s939 rig@ 720p medium/(high on one or two) settings and it's giving VERY playable FPS. Would the 3400 APU push similar details WITHOUT a secondary GPU? Just don't want to commit and say "this rig will play *insert console port fine" LMAO! then end up with a slide show. Of course i would recommend he use DX9/10 if he has a choice in games. Would you say the APU GPU is faster than a 8800GT? (DX 9/10 workloads). Just trying to get a frame of reference maybe a "dumb" question. And is the GPU dependent on DDR3 ram speed (say if i got 1333 8gb OR 4gb 1600/1866). Bit of an "old school" builder when anything regarding "integrated graphics" sent a chill down your spine.

Thanx.

Honestly? The base A4 integrated graphics chip will NOT be able to handle those games (even on low) on its own.

The 8800GT (love that card) and the 9600GT(my very first Nvidia card wubsmiley.gif) are leagues ahead of the GT630.

What's your MAX budget, if you really had to stretch it?

Yeah have to admit it the 8800GT seems to just go on and on (it's an OC'ed edition with a 680mhz core can't remember who manufactured it though). I had to gasp when i saw it delivering VERY playable frame rates in Sleeping Dogs in fact i'm very happy that the rig on default (2.2ghz!) is very much able to deliver "the goods" @720p (it's a triple hand me down! and i do smile when i take the side off to dust it out and see the old A8N SLI Deluxe still rollin' after all these years). Still rock stable!.

I guess he could stretch to £230 BUT i would prefer a dedicated GPU if possible as to be honest i'm not sold on these APU's really (Nvidia OR AMD) i'm not fussed BUT i have no knowledge of AMD GPU's what so ever. Any help would be very welcome just trying to get him the most bang for his buck really.

Thanx.

Here goes bruce.gif

CPU - AMD CPU Phenom II 965 - 71 pounds shipped

MOBO - Gigabyte 78LMT-USB3 - 40 pounds shipped

RAM - Corsair Memory XMS3 4GB DDR3 1600 MHz 18 pounds shipped

CASE - NZXT Source 210 Elite White - 35 pounds shipped

PSU - Corsair Builder Series CMPSU-430CXV2UK 430W - 36 pounds shipped

GPU - MSI HD 6770 - 74 pounds

Total - 274 pounds

I know I went a tad over budget but this is the best you could possibly get for the price.

Also, if you decide to go in for the 6670 DDR3 version, your total would be 250 pounds. The 6670 DDR3 version should be comparable to a 9600GT.

Does your friend need the build immediately? The Trinity APUs launch literally next week and the 7660D iGP should be comparable to if not faster than a Radeon 6670.

Hi won't be for the next few weeks (maybe month or so) because he is only giving me small amounts of money at a time to save/purchase parts. Can hold out for sure thanks for the advise.
