Why buy a console? - Page 5

I dont understand this price argument.

It's cheaper to buy an average computer than a console, a tv, and a laptop.

I'm positive that you are paying more for your multiple devices, the individual cost is just less than a whole computer, which give you the illusion to save money.

EDIT: Just look at the price of games.

The average PC gamer wont even buy them (I personally buy all my games. When it comes to EA or activision I choose not to play the game at all)

And I just pre-ordered the new hitman for 34$. A new xbox game is 70$. Do that for 2-3 games and you have a cheap graphic card that will allow you to run them.

I come from a background where I was privileged to own a Playstation 2 and a pre-built PC. I've been playing on computers for about 12 years now and been playing on consoles for roughly 7 years and I honestly don't see any issue with either.

Sometimes I prefer getting serious, throwing on my headset and jamming some games of BF3, battlegrounds in WoW or play some Guild Wars 2. Then I have those days where I prefer lying in bed playing God Of War on my console. I don't feel like getting serious and I enjoy being relaxed so I play my console.

Nothing about supporting the man or giving in to the corporations. I enjoy playing the God Of War series and it's out on Playstation so I bought one. I'm better playing FPS with a mouse and keyboard so I built my own PC.

With a console, it's easier to have friends over and play multiplayer in say NFS or GT as you normally have a larger screen associated with your console.

As a gamer, I'm willing to save up and spend the extra money on buying the games and upgrading my rig.

Thanks

Haha! True that.

When I get friends over we often end up plugging the old gamecube  to play smash.
You can do that with a PC with the proper emulation tool, but it's a bit harder to set up. You also need the controllers.

There is an easy solution. Do what I did.

Sell your Xbox 360, your 2 slug guns, and your laptop and buy a PC instead. biggrin.gif
Or just get a job.

That where your and my opinion differ. In reality they don't need to be spoon fed but instead choose to be. "Why is computer experience and knowledge all of a sudden a given and something people should know?" Because computers are (and have been for quite a while now) everywhere and pretty much everyone (in the western world) has them and they are not that hard to understand. People know that cars have engines, gearboxes and brakes don't they? They don't know or need to know how exactly all the parts work but they know they exist and about what they do. It should be the same for computers but it is not because again people are so lazy they don't even read what is printed on the box.

Tell that to the people who mod them.

Also do not mistake convenience for laziness. If I've just done a ten hour shift the last thing I want to be doing is installing new drivers, or Googling why my game isn't running a specific way, when all I want to do is play it.

Lastly, as a multi platform gamer, I would hardly say I am lazy, if anything the majority of people who own consoles own PC's in some form aswell.

Really, it's not a very good call.

Because there's a lot of myths surrounding PC gaming.

Ranging from the price to how its "dying" and the only games that come out for it /are good are "MMORPG/RTS"

People aren't as informed as lets say.. a member of this forum. The average user is not tech savvy.

There is a difference between 'useful' and 'need'. It's extremely useful to understand how your PC works, but it's not needed.

Like my example of accounting a few page back. Accounting only takes a couple of days to learn the basics, it's extremely useful but most people don't bother. It's boring and a drag. Unfortunatly computers are 'boring and a drag' to most people out there.

They know what they need to know. Turn it on, do their work, turn it off and make sure their antivirus says 'Protected'.

With regards to gaming. Buy a console and it will play every game available for the console you own. A PC on the other hand is a much more complicated beast.

The younger generation knows these basics, but that's about the extent of it.

But that's the thing I don't get. Why do people trow around that kind of statements. People make PCs and PC gaming out to be so much more complicated then it really is. I have been playing games for a long time. And in fact I used to be a avid console player.

I started out with the 8-bit NES
Moved on to a Playstation. I actually had 3 of thees as the damn things kept breaking
Then a Playstation 2
Followed closely by a XBOX

On the PC side I started out with a 200Hz pentium + vodo 4Mb some time after I got the first PS. Bear in mind that I was not more then 10 at the time. Back then computers where not as easy to use as to day and there was no google to consult either yet I had virtually no problems playing games on it. Why? Because I knew how to read. The game says it need a 166MHz Pentium as minimum. Great as my gray box says it has 200MHz. Installation was super easy to even back then. I didn't know much English back then but even so I can't recall a single game that would not install properly and I had plenty of games.

For years I had PC's and consoles side by side and never really viewed the PC harder or inconvenient compared to consoles it was just different.

Why am I telling you this? Because i want to make a point that I don't dislike consoles in general but that from a gamers perspective current gen consoles are just not that good. PCs are so much cheaper and easier to use then they used to be while consoles lackluster performance and increased complexity has made consoles all but obsolete for even slightly serious gamers.

This is of course this is not taking into account console exclusives. If you want to play uncharted you are forced to use a PS3 but then again so are Xbox 360 owners.

You're still missing the point. Most people don't want to learn about: driver updates, PC maintenence, Antivirus, DirectX, Game patches, windows updates etc. For them it's just too much to think about, buy a console and everything "Just works".

Then there is actually buying a PC. "Which one should i get?" There are so many traps. Buying a so called "Gaming PC" might not even be that good. Then once you get the PC you gotta install all your games, then you have to start your game and plug in all the settings. High/Medium/Low, AA, AF, Vsync`??? Brain explosion....

With a console you get a gaming platform that just works, not to mention that people who play on a console are completely happy with it. I don't disagree that a PC is better, i live and breath the modern PC, but i understand why most other people don't. Simple things like finding the correct driver is a real pain in the arse for most people.

I don't know how old you are, but once you get a few kids and start working full time the last thing you want to be doing is trying to get your PC to work properly if you didn't learn it when you were 15. It's a matter of time and money and for most families a console is cheaper and easier!
