Is it possible to overclock i7 3820 still considering it's not a K? - Page 4

Yes, it's possible. It's a little different than overclocking by multi, but there's a great guide here on the forum. I get about 37C-38C idle, 70C-73C at %100 load at 4.625ghz, 1.32v with an H100. Room temp is about 21C. My sig rig draws about 850 watts. The real question is do you need all the extra bells and whistles that come with X79. If you need more PCI-E lanes, SATA 3, etc. If not a 3770K is a little faster and you can get a less expensive board.

here's the guide

The only thing that is actually a fact is the clock for clock performance. Buying a 3820 because it might hit 5.0 might bite you in the bottom.
OP: will you be running 3 or more gfx cards at some point in time? Do you case for usb3.0? Do you care for power usage? Do you need bundles of ram for what you do?

That was what I was trying to explain. 3930K's comparisons and advise is based on wrong expectations.

Enough is not good enough . Just for one 670 your choice is 750W -> so do not mess around

This is what I'll use it to.

Playing games: 40%
Photoshop: 35%
Browsing: 15%

It'll run with following setup;

Samsung 40" FullHD LCD Screen and two 22" for other tabs.

I hope this helps smile.gif

OP: will you be running 3 or more gfx cards at some point in time? Do you case for usb3.0? Do you care for power usage? Do you need bundles of ram for what you do?

Two 680's one day, no, I don't case for 3.0, nope, I don't care for power usage.

I really apprechiate the help I get guys, seems like all of you really wishes the best for me and my rig smile.gif

My choice, the 650W version, wasn't available. Also it was cheaper for some reason. So shush you.

OP is you tongue.gif

@ben ten: If you're doing PS get X79. If you upgrade to 3930K it will be massively different for Photoshop.

I'd go with the 3770k if I was you. Cheaper and will perform better.

Now me on the other hand I would get the 3820 because it would suit my needs better.

Just so you can get a clear picture, look at this http://www.anandtech.com/show/6228/asrock-x79-extreme11-review-pcie-30-x16x16x16x16-and-lsi-8way-sassata/9
(the ASUS rampage IV is also a x79 board).

As you can see, even with 4 GPU's, the difference is very very small for gaming, while the 3770K is faster for things like photoshop. I don't know why 3930K keeps saying that x79 is better for you, but from what I see that you are going to do with the computer, the Z77 system would serve you just as well or better.

Please tell me that a 3930K is slower than a 3770K meaning it. At Photoshop.

Could you clarify why the 3820 would suit your needs better?

Again, are you drunk? He never said he was going to buy the 6 core.
