Is AMD Still Worthy to be Used for Gaming @ 1080p? - Page 3

A PhII quad is still enough for gaming, easily.
It might not be as good as Sandy/Ivy, but that doesn't mean it's not good enough (in general).

BTW...I have a Corsair A70 collecting dust...

Yeah but the mounting on AM3(+) means that you're going to get an upward-blowing setup only (not rear blowing) unless you buy a special mount (i.e. from Xigmatek) probably also no more than $10.

I had 1055t @ 4ghz paired with 2 5770's @ 1000ghz and I was able to play bf3, dirt 3, crysis 2 and metro 2033 @ 1080p at close to max. With phenom 2 x 6 and highly overclocked 7870 you should be fine at that resolution. My current amd build will run bf3 on ultra with AA off at well over 60fps.

Good luck!

Good looking out thumb.gif Probably I'll use the SA on my Intel rig for the AMD rig & use the A70 for the Intel rig.

On that note, at 1080p, with every setting at the lowest it can go (including Physics on Low), I get around 30-40fps at stock. During a small fight with a few physics-reacting particles being thrown around, I dip down to below 10. I could run the original Borderlands just fine... games are getting more demanding tongue.gif Will install a 6950 and 9800GT for PhysX and test it tonight.

Im alittle behind using a 1090t but I have no problem with any current games. Amd for the most part yes will get beat out by intel. But that doesn't mean you can't save the few bucks rock AMD and honestly be perfectly fine in games as long as your cpu doesn't bottleneck you gpu.

If I were you, I'd go with a 6 core FX with really good cooling (Custom loop or a block) the best way to get AMD performance is overclocking. get that baby to 5GHz and you're games will be more than fine, even at higher than 1080p
and a 7970 is not at all bottlenecked by an 8120@5GHz. My CPU usage is never over 60% of however many cores are being used, even with all kinds of physics mods on crysis.

Looks like you have a some good choices. The 7870 is a great OC'er and will be great paired with a 6100 or 4100. As far as your MB choices the 970A-UD3 is by far the best choice there. It has a 8+2 power phase and is a good board. The other 2 are 4 phase and just are not as strong. Not bad by any means but I wouldn't overclock very far on them. It will be a good little build and will most certainly rival a cheap i3 setup.

As far as BL2 performance I think the difference lies mostly in GPU choice and Physx. I wouldn't worry to much about it if I were you. If you check that thread there is a user with a 4100 and CFX 6870's holding great frame rates. Price comparison wise there is a i3 in there that is struggling just as much if not more. For the price you are getting a very powerful and capable rig. You'll always get better performance by spending more but is there a need to?

Those were also all done at stock speeds.

Is Intel faster than AMD at the moment? Umm durr, I think everyone knows the answer to this question.

Is that a REALLY good price on that FX6100? Absolutely! Since I've already got a 2500k build, I would personally go for that as a secondary build in a heart beat.

Just make sure you find a GOOD priced motherboard. I've seen Asus 990X and 990FX boards for under $100 if you don't mind refurbished (no problems with any of my refurbed Asus boards to date).

Pair that 6100 up with a 7870, overclock the snot out of everything, and it should perform up there with your 2500k at stock in most games, or faster in others.

In other words, I would personally go for what you're going for, just make sure you deal shop for the motherboard to make the deal even sweeter. There's no problems with the FX CPU's and single GPU setups, especially once overclocks to 4.5GHz or higher.+

I feel the 6100 will give you room for other activities beside gaming. For the price you can get a nice cheap AM3+ mobo, since you have the ram already you are set. Nice video card and you don't have to worried about anything. I use an FX-8150, GTX 570, DDR3 1600, and my gaming experience is great except I need to get an SSD. biggrin.gif
