@Llyod: I appreaciate you're trying to help but what you're showing me just doesn't make any sense to me and I need to read up on mdadm and try it out as you suggested...I just keep hoping there's still another way that would work in an easier fashion. I'm lazy and not a Linux Guru or a programmer so if I botch things it's kind of a big problem for me. And considering that a lot of other things are much easier in Linux than in Windows I kept expecting this to follow the pattern.

Lloyds method is by far the sanest posted here - and I include my own code when I say that. And the Python script is broken by design - so don't even waste your time on that as there's nothing in it which is even worth keeping.

If you want to get your head around Lloyd's method, then install a VM and play in there.

Alright. When I'm free to wreck this system I will give Lloyd's method of mdadm a go because I know it works as he wouldn't tout it otherwise. That said...I still want to know if there is someway to get the method in the following link can be replicated with overlayfs as unionfs is dead.

It seems like the simplest methods of doing things in Linux are dying or being buried under more complicated ones.

So far all I've done with overlayfs has been basically the same thing that you can do with mount -R the whole bind thing. Can't seem to get it to replicate the unionfs abilities. Maybe someone else knows how?

PS: @ Lloyd: Would your mdadm method help prolong SSDs? I figure since it's limiting the frequency of use it should but I'm just a business major. redface.gif

well it's probably dead for a reason. More complicated is usually better. Less complicated is either problematic and has holes or is simply abstracting more complicated inner workings from the end user.

raid1 is union-block .. setup kvm and test it in a virtual machine

sure activity on the ssd will be less .. but only on the dirs you decide to mirror. If you're worried about drive failure you should be running at least two in raid1 anyway.

But if you do software raid with ssds, the module currently does not support trim natively. You would have to degrade the array and run trim on each drive manually .. which reminds me i should to do that on mine

I'm not sure I agree with that; Linux is the easiest it's ever been.

Not mandatory kernel recompiling, hardware hot plugging, package managers with better dependency resolution, better desktop software, better documentation, etc

I'm not talking about things that have become easier but thing that have become more complicated or confusing. I agree that right now Linux for general use is the easiest it has probably ever been. But things like that unionfs post are going away and are being replaced with the (still easy but less capable) methods like moving your /tmp and caches to tmpfs (a small improvement is gained there compared to doing the unionfs of lib, share, and bin onto ramfs). I'm just frustrated that a method I think I could get working and without much risk isn't available anymore. I mean I try replicating it with overlayfs but even though everything is copied and mounted like it should be the damn programs tell me they can't find their data files or whatever. Maybe I'm not using the right version of the cp command?

I also get errors in which mount then doesn't do anything and tells me to read the man pages whenever I try to mount rw or ro with overlayfs but since there's so little that I can find about overlayfs I can't figure out how.

This isn't any good. What happens if you copy /usr/lib/file/X and a running program changes it's contents 1 nanosecond after the copy is committed or after it is read into the copy buffer ?


file system mirroring will never guarantee consistency unlike raid1 which just checks the bits on the disk. At best you would have to do that copy with the file system remounted read only for that to be of any use. You want to mirror bits, not big clumps of bits that don't have guaranteed ACID semantics

I guess using rsync -avuz wouldn't change the situation? I'm still laughing how because windows didn't chose to advance the same way Linux did with so many shared libs and choose to go the self contained exe route that while that made it slower than Linux it now makes being a cheapo who wants faster program startups easier as you can just install the exe to a RAMdisk and everything is gtg. I've pretty much giving up until probably December I can figure out how to do the mdadm thing for just /usr/lib, /usr/share, /usr/bin, and maybe the system bin (not sbin) and lib. I'm not sure I'll have enough RAM though. I guess in Linux I really do need an SSD. mad.gif

This might be a crazy thing to say on this forum, but the performance gains are liable to be minimal. Complaining that you need an SSD just to run Linux acceptably is kinda crazy (yeah, I know you were ranting, but it was an exaggeration!)

LOL. Don't worry I'm not saying that Linux isn't running acceptably. I mean hands down on a HDD I think Linux wins because it seems designed to combat every shortcoming that a HDD would produce in terms of speed performance. It is just that since I started using RAMdisks in Windows to run my programs when I use Windows (which isn't that much) I get used to things loading almost instantly and then when I get to Linux the 4-8 seconds it takes XBMC for example seem unbearable because I haven't found a solution that works (anymore) in similar fashion besides Lloyd method which to be honest scares/intimidates me. redface.gif

All of my programs load pretty much instantly... after they're loaded into cache. But I don't see a need to cold boot firefox ( as an example ) a whole second faster ( it's pretty fast already ).

I mucked around with a RamDisk a while ago and determined it pretty much... useless, at least for me.
