MSI Z77 M-Power Big Bang - Testing with CL3P20 - Page 2

^if you want to freeze something, drive up to my spot CL3P20, I try to have 50L on hand at all times:D

Lots of Ivy binning lately, so lots of chips to test and I would like to see how the MPower compares to the others.

2nd day of MOA, MSI gave us 5 Mpowers to play with. Nearly everyone was running 1.9v-1.95v just fine. Only one VRM out of the 5 blew and it didn't take the CPU with it either. Everyone was impressed. Drweez brought his 6.6Ghz 3770K and was able to squeeze 6.8Ghz out of it on the Mpower. He was a happy camper. They spent almost an hour afterwards gathering insight and expectations from the room of benchers. So I would expect some positive bios changes and a little bit slimmed down version of their OC software.

One of the things they noticed was once a GPU was frozen on the platform, it tended to hard reset instead of soft reset causing CBB issues with the 680's.

In general, I think MSI has a product it can really be proud of. Some minor bios optimizations and its a top contender with some of the other boards built for extreme OC.

Roger that. Good to know some have seen the +side of 6.5ghz on this PCB so far. I am trying to work out more info on the 'uP' controller..  Your post gave me idea to update the BIOS and re-check power findings so far..

Interested to see if BIOS update fixes the boot-loop im running into.. have to clear CMOS everytime you set something bad.. board cycles on/.off until you do. As well - BIOS profiles dont save in the OEM BIOS.. except for 'profile #1'.. none of the rest will actually hold a saved setting once CMOS is clear.

Isnt that a Click Bios 2 issue?

Im not sure about the profile save thing but the start up loop has been a problem on all MSI boards since the P67's.

Im really tempted with this board, just cant decide between Maximus Gene, Asrock Extreme 6 and this one. thinking.gif

Well the Gene and the Mpower are the same price at most retailers... with the Mpower you get standard slot spacing [big concern if you are running anything other than Slim-pots for GPU ... as benching 2x GPU's is not possible with Fat's]. As well - you get a third PCI-E slot.. onboard Wifi and Bluetooth.. as well as built-in Display port!! Once you factor in the previous items.. it makes the Gene a hard sale in my opinion.

The component and build Q on the Mpower is top-notch.. I have a personal issue with the solid cap cans around the CPU socket on the Gene's too... I know they are really good Q caps.. but still - cant Asus show some love! It sucks to insulate around those!

Some very good points there CL3P20, you may of just swayed me back toward the MPower and Id of probably gone and clicked the buy button already, but Im slightly miffed with MSI at the moment because I swapped out the z68 in my sig rig last night, back to the P67a GD65. But then today I went to go start it for the first time only to find that its stuck in the boot loop and both Bios are corrupt!worriedsmiley.gif
Ive tried all the usual tricks that I know of but nothing is working.

So at the moment Im not sure I want another MSI board , plus the last few m/b's Ive had have all been MSI so Id like to try out other bios setups / softwares and see how my chips performs on other boards too.

Im eagerly awaiting more results from you with this board still though:thumb:

New 32mil for 4ghz challenge.. still on OEM BIOS for now. Going to flash and see if new BIOS brings increased scaling to memory beyond 2400mhz..  Currently running 2x4 Team LV 2133 CAS9 kit.. Samsung HCH9's

Ram is not stable regardless of timing or voltage beyond 2430mhz.

3770k

105.3bclk

2316mhz RAM; 9-11-11-26 @ 1.71v **forgot to update in SS

1.01vcore

1.13 vccio

1.11 IMC/SA

1.71 vDIMM

1.066v PCH

1.82v PLL

**Note 17.1 BIOS has issue with HDD detection; easy fix if benching = power down & move HDD to port#6 on mobo wink.gif ... otherwise, HDD would "dissapear" at random on restarts when OC'd. Voltages did not fix or force the issue to return...

New BIOS inbound - more testing to resume.

Updated with 17.2b4 BIOS

3770k

105.3bclk

2316mhz RAM; 9-11-11-17 @ 1.71v BIOS = 1.73v Real

1.01vcore

1.13 vccio

Auto- IMC/SA

1.71 vDIMM

1.066v PCH

Auto- v PLL

7m54.843s

Subtiming adjustments working much better on newer BIOS. tRFC and tWR were the two major improvements .. all of the subtimings were able to tighten on this BIOS

**Two things to note about 17.2b4 BIOS:

1. Leaving bclk at default 100.00 = 100.50 !! You MUST set 100.01 to get actual 100.00 in OS wth.gif

2. RAM overvolts more.. +.02v from BIOS setting. ie- 1.71v set = 1.736v real

This run was 2400mhz, 9-11-11-30  1.74v BIOS/1.76v real ; Loop fail @ 20 tongue.gif
