2gb or not, a 660 is somewhat bandwidth limited beyond 1080p therefore i disagree with this reccomendation. A couple 7950's and OP is set.

That really depends on the game, but if you are running texture mods or MSAA, then it's going to show its limitations even at 1080p. It can hold its own surprisingly well at 1440p without MSAA in most games, but the 7950 is a better choice.

I'm trying to futureproof him. A couple years down the road Crysis 3/4 and BF4 will certainly get taxed on 660's vs 7950's especially with the price 7950's are now.

2GB of vram is plenty for whatever.

7950s are hitting 280$ with rebates... two of them (get one with a decent nonref cooler the ref one sucks badly) and they will decimate everything you throw at them and they will give you 100 frames on even battlefield if you lower the AA at 2560x1440.

Nothing beats them at that res for best bang for buck. Got a thread with tests with my rig. Look at them if you wanna make sure.

The only thing with the 7950 route is that I will be adding an aftermarket cooler to whatever I buy to make it quieter, so the 7950's need $160 in aftermarket coolers and cost $60 more for just the cards... I am a little short on cash right now so I don't know if I can swing that frown.gif

Just get a non reference 7950 then. There's plenty of double/triple fan one's out there that are near silent at max load.

I Yeah, 7950 FTW. Nvidia kind of screwed itself with the 256 bit bus this generation.

$60 more than what? The 660?
Don't bother with after market air coolers, just get a card with a twinfrozr like cooler. If you're going for water blocks, I've never seen one go as high as $160 for that card.

no for crossfire, I could probably get away with just a single card though now that I think about it...

$60 more than a 7970 ligthing/ 680/670 4GB

2 $80 twinfrozer coolers

What about this to be cross-fired later?

I've heard mixed reviews on gigabyte graphics cards,

How about the MSI? http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814127667
