A8 or A6 vs an Atom or E-450 - Page 2

post #11 of 27
Not much to add myself in terms of which cpu to choose, but this guy managed to fit a full atx board in his with some clever space management. Might let you rethink to a higher spec cpu to use. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TggHtINGIyc

E450 is likely to work fine for what you're doing. I have an e-350 in a HP DM1z and it can even play Tf2 on lowish settings very well. It should be more than good enough for what you're using it for and use next to no power.

Any of those will be able to be a HTPC without an issue. My Atom/Ion does it without breaking a sweat. An A6 is pretty overkill unless you plan on gaming.

I would just grab an E-350 with a small pico PSU.

Thread Starter
After some research i decided to drop the blue ray drive, i didn't know the audio wasn't as good as my standalone Samsung Blu-ray player. ill just have to mod the xbox to remove the drive slot, maybe shrink it down, and swap the eject for the power and... should be fun.
so now the HTPC is just for streaming i guess, from home server, and hulu/netflix. with this chnge im guessing the e-350 will be enough, which would be cheaper, i like cheaper.

TOTAL= $228.92 or $227.96

wattage wise im looking to add a few fans probably 80mm (at least 2, no more than 4), some LEDs (on fans and in top globe), and 4 USB ports (to replace the controller ports).
what do we think OCN?

Digital audio is digital audio, sending DTS, Dolby, DTS-HD or TrueHD from anything is the same and will be decoded by the receiver the same (yes the receiver makes a difference to the people that were ready to flame already). In my opinion the best way to play Blu-ray on a HTPC is to put the optical drive in a desktop/server/htpc and rip it to mkv (not encode) and play them that way all you will loose is the menus.

What media formats does the PS3 support just curious? I know previously I was using my 360 as an HTPC Streamer from my main rig but it only supported .avi and .wmv anything else would have to be transcoded on the fly. My A6 is a beast! I highly recommend the AMD APUs.

Yeah those APUs are not slouch the early ones area die shrink of phenom IIs. I've been planning for years on making a NES PC with an APU and hybrid cfx with dedicated card a flexible PCIe riser card. Problem is i need a good Nintendo to start with, the the one i got a while ago is a brittle cracked piece of crap.
