Good 40" TV to use as a monitor? - Page 2

Show me a TV that will produce better results than my Ultrasharp for less than £500 and I will be surprised smile.gif (bearing in mind my monitor was only £200 ish)

Although the point of this isn't to convince you not to use a TV, at first I thought you wanted to 'move' to using a TV as a monitor, and normally people don't understand just how different it can be, but seeing as you have done it before and are happy, enough said!

Maybe I should reattempt at gaming on my TV... hmmm

For watching films and stuff on my TV, I'm using a LG 32" with the Smart TV which is nice smile.gif

I'll never go back to a monitor. I don't care how awesome everyone claims they look. Being hunched over straining at a small screen is ridiculous. I'll take the performance hit and go with a large screen that I can sit back from, thank you very much. Plus gaming on a bigger screen just feels more immersive.

Really, any well rated HDTV will work as a monitor, as long as it's 1080p and has a decently fast response time, you should be fine.

Anyone who is sitting hunched straining at a small screen (relative to a persons size monitor actually) means the person using it is ridiculous, as they obviously have no concept of ergonomics, let alone understand how to use a desk properly. Otherwise we would all just have our monitors on our knee's.

OP: Do you have a budget for the TV? I'm quite interested on seeing what difference's there could be between TV's smile.gif

Any idea what the Steam 'big picture' thing is?

I don't think you will go wrong with any purchase you make. I have a 42" Philips I bought from Walmart for $250 on clearance and I love it! I sit 2 to 3 feet away from it and surf the net, play games, watch movies, etc.

Just pick a brand, size and price with the options you are looking for and go with it. You already know that you like it and you will have a difficult time getting OCN to give you and good feedback on this topic. (if that wasn't already obvious)

*edit I would also shop in store if you can before buying something of this size online. This way you can see the picture on display, hopefully.

id like to stay around 600 but id go up to 1000 if i got something a lot better. but my concern is that looking at a $600 samsung led and a $1000 model, you might go from 120 to 240hz, gain 3d, slim and smart tv. none of which i care for. 2D IQ is all i care about, which if there is no difference between the two in that regard id get the $600 set, but if the 2D IQ is alot better on the $1000 one then id get that one. I want a set with good blacks, good color and viewing angle, and good panel uniformity.

If you are going to use a TV as a monitor, you ideally want one that supports 4:4:4. There hasn't been all that much research into the topic because it's not a topic that concerns all that many people, but you'll find some information here.

Another thing to look out for is image processing. The less the better. You should look for a TV where you can turn most if not all image processing features. In PC usage they will do noting but degrade the image quality. A TV with a dedicated PC mode would be preferable but at the very least make sure you can turn off the TV's overscanning (it blurs the image and totally ruins the sharpens of a PC signal).
