Project Skirata

Welcome to Project Skirata

Introduction:
I'm Artur, a tech fan, gamer and youtuber. I have to "switch home" once a week, because my parents are divorced, luckily, they only live 5 streets away, making it a 6 or 7min walk. My current rig, dubbed White Narwhal (sig) is at one house, and when I'm at my mother's place, I don't have access to its processing power, storage space, or gaming performance, I do have a laptop I move around, nevertheless it doesn't suffice. That's why I'm creating this Project Skirata, because I want to be able to move my rig from place to place without a big effort.

Specs:

CPU: i5 2500K
MB: ASUS P8Z68-V PRO/GEN3
RAM: 16GB Vengeance
GPU: HD6990

I'm at 8GB Vengeance right now, but I'm planning to double up by the time I finish this build. This will also be my first attempt at watercooling, and here is the watercooling stuff list:

RAD: 1080mm Phobya SuperNova

(I'm currently doing research on other parts, feedback is appreciated, I'll fill the list in as I decide)

My Idea:

I want a BIG case with wheels. I've been looking at some CaseLabs, the Lian Li D8000, and thinking of some custom wood designs, I'll post sketchup blueprints as soon as I have them finished.

I hope to make this log enjoyable,
Thanks for your Feedback,
Artur.

Thanks, I'm currently working on some Sketchup Models, the case I'm thinking of might have enough space to have some peripheral compartments too.

Any ideas?

I have never worked with one of those cases, but isn't that too big (even with wheels) to move from a house to another every single week ?

Size isn't really a problem, the only limits are some door widths, such as doors inside the houses and lift doors.

It might be a problem, if it's too small, trying to push an object that's only knee-high is a pain in the ass, but if it's somewhere around table or waist high, it's like pushing a supermarket cart around.

Make it small and really light so you can pick it up - otherwise its going to be really tedious pushing that thing around every week. If you look at cases specifically designed for lan parties, like the bitfenix survivor and coolermaster scout, they have handles on the top (except the handle in the bitfenix is a pull out handle and hidden when you don't want it to be seen). The main weight of the case comes from the steel so make it out of aluminium or acrylic and it will weigh a lot less and still look classy biggrin.gif

Now I just feel torn between both, on one hand, a nice small carriable PC looks like a nice idea, can I keep it under 10kg? (22lbs)
On the other hand, where does my 1080mm rad come in? ):

If I get a huge case, it will be a pain to push around, but will be heavily watercooled, have space for tons of HDDs, peripherals and stuff.
Because the issue with the small case is that I will still need a big bag to throw my headset, mouse, keyboard, mousepad and other random gaming gear in.

Another idea is going to IKEA, grab a nice big piece of furniture, and then mod it to my needs:

I will possibly go there the day after tomorrow, and will take a look (and meassurements) at whatever I see, but after browsing through there website, these are two pieces of furniture that might be interesting:

(I don't quite like the wheels on this one though)

why not do an ITX build? Super easy to move around. The prodigy can fit some hefty hardware in there!
