caps and replacing parts on boards

hey i just brought 4 more cards to play with.
1st how do you pick which cap to buy? lol

i got 2 x 7800gtx and 2 x 6800gt.
one of the 6800's is missing a cap

so 16v 450uf? or how does one read a cap haha

also a 7800gtx got damaged in shipping ( due to not being wrapped properly )
i can measure what i need off the other card ( if that helps )
how do i know what to replace it with? sorry haha gotta learn somehow i guess.

the 2 that got knocked off are near the black dots, and one of the small 3 pin black chips ( again sorry not sure how to tell what things are ect ) got knocked semi off, holding on by 1 pin lol.

all of these are going to be vmodded also lol.

i dont have most of my stuff with me atm, but if i could order caps/vrs for the mods, gonna grab a DMM next time down at the store as always needed a second one lol..

also wanting to do cap mods on these 4 if all goes well haha.
how do i know what caps to put on their? ect (:

@ lighthead - if the positions are marked/labeled with a "Cxxx" number.. they you are dealing with a Cap. The size of the small SMD type is not sooo important as the connection itself. If you have another damaged GPU you can safely pull a similar sized SMD type cap .. it will do just fine.

 

**As for the top pic.. looks to be an input cap. These are typically 12v.. yours appears to be 330uf @ 12v. Whit the uf value is good to increase.. its more important to increase the cap size itself. I recommend replacing any 12v with a 16v cap for better results.

cheers looking around i have a 9800gt that passed away.

on the board as can see in pic ( 2nd one, 7800gtx ) C505.
the 9800gt has C536 and C502, would it matter if over rather then under?

and also has a cap 16v 470uF cap?

and yeah hoping to replace most/all the caps on these cards ( well add onto ) when order in some haha smile.gif

The position of the SMD your stealing makes no matter... only physical size [as this is the only visual indicator of potential in SMD type caps] .. basically anything that is close to the same size physically will do the job.

 

and 470uf @ 16v is just right :) ... if you have more, those surface mounts are easy as pie to rip out and replace.

the 9800 has 4 of those 16v caps, 2 x 6.3v 1500uf and 4 x 4v 1000uf lol.
proably just order enough todo all 4 cards rolleyes.gif ?

only thing is have to get my soldering iron from dads frown.gif so will be about 13 days lol

**For surface mount caps.. just pull off the old and land the new to the left over pads.. thumb.gif
