SFX PSU for GTX 580?

Thread Starter
Is this possible? I don't want to overclock, I just want to fit a powerful card in a minimalist build. The GPU is the PNY 580 LC-CPU version and the candidate PSU is a Silverstone gold 450W/37A model.

Exact total build:
http://pcpartpicker.com/p/i4W9

If that won't work, there is enough room to almost fit a full seasonic atx, but I would prefer something in between atx and sfx if it exists and this power supply is insufficient. If there are other ways to drop the power draw (low power Xeon @ 45W for example) that would change your conclusions I would also appreciate that advice.

Thanks in advance.

It will work... but I have to ask, why don't you get a Radeon 7xxx or GTX 6xx card?

I got this card specifically because it included a full closed water loop and a top end card for $400. Kepler would be nice but I didn't see any with built in loops that would handle 1080p like butter. Additionally Fermi 580 is better at CUDA than the newer 680, a feature I plan to use - opencl may catch up in the next few years, but I would rather take the sure thing. I also admit a full NVIDIA bias. So if a 660ti or better with plug and play water loop exists for a reasonable price, I'd love to know about it. But again very concerned about power supply since I understand that part the least. Is there any risk of hardware damage by attempting this configuration should it fail?

No, the PSU comes with all necessary protections.

Also, I'm sorry to tell you this, but that's not a water loop... that's an insult to water loops.

450w should work

The ST45SF will indeed power a GTX580. I put my GTX580 inside my HTPC for giggles, which happens to be inside the FT03B-MINI, and it both fit, and powered it plenty fine.

Better to ditch that card and grab a HD 7950/7970 or GTX 670 and then throw an H80 onto a K-series CPU instead of what you have going on there right now.

Really, really weird build choices even for a SFF. The GPU+CPU on a closed loop with a single 120mm radiator isn't really a good idea.

If I were in your position I'd save a heap of cash by switching to the ASRock Z77E-ITX ($30 saved), 7950 ($130-150 saved), and i5-3570K ($15 saved). Part of the proceeds could get you a H80 and once overclocked this setup will dominate what you've got there.

It's not a proper water loop granted (I did specify closed), but I don't have the inclination or budget to mess with that right now. Snark aside, is this actually a bad solution in a cramped space?
Sorry mate but Sin is correct, thats no water loop and its WAY more expensive than buying a used card and second hand components... hell for 400$ you could get a new loop for the card.

IF I were you I would pick up a 480 on the marketplace for $150-160 a 500-600W atx psu for ~80-100$ (you will need more than 450w if you oc the card and possibly a cpu in the future) then throw the rest at a real water loop that can cool BOTH the CPU and GPU.

It has nothing to do with the space, its just a bad loop in general especially for the money you will be paying for it.

The motherboard choice was deliberate, I know it is not the bang for buck, but I like the integrated wifi (including the "go" feature), bluetooth, and bios design. I'm open to other gpu's but I am setting the threshold at max settings, minimum fps above 30, at 1080P. I am concerned about overclocking since I am very attached to the idea of a small box containing all I need without tons of empty racks for things I will never use, and the maximum SFX PSU I found was listed, 450W/37A Gold. If an H-series cooler is recommended I don't see why this setup gets so much hate? I installed it in a different machine and the temps never rose above 50 with Crysis 2 at max for a few hours. Would air cooling do that in a constricted ITX build? (If so that's all I need)
