Stable FX6100 rig died, help troubleshoot please?

Hi all, I'm fairly new to overclocking and this is my first post, so please flag up any stupid mistakes I make tongue.gif

I built my PC (specs in sig) about 3 months ago now, and has been running flawlessly since then. However, the other day I decided to upgrade the stock FX cooler to an Antec Kuhler H2O 620. It was a huge improvement and kept my temps waay down. Suspiciously low in fact. At 3.6Ghz (I had it at 3.6 on the stock cooler and didn't reset it before swapping to the Antec) CoreTemp was reporting idle temps of 6*C, which clearly isn't correct as a closed loop water cooler could only ever get the CPU to the coolants temp, which could only ever get as cold as the ambient temp in the room (roughly 20*C). This confused me a bit, but nevertheless I kept OCing, and noticed that the BIOS was reporting a more sensible idle temp of 28*C. This still seemed acceptable, and I managed to get to 4.3Ghz before Prime95 started to become unstable (at 4.3 the bios was reporting 31*C idle, and CoreTemp was reporting 49/50*C at full load. This seemed pretty good to me, so I left Prime running and went to school. I got back and everything was good. Prime still running correctly, temps still good, so I quit prime (after about 7-8 hours I'd guess) and played some games and ran some benchmarks. I was pretty happy with my overclock and the performance increases in stuff like cinebench and geekbench were pretty drastic, and in line with other peoples results with similar OC's. I went to bed with a movie playing (Flash streaming, no real CPU legwork) and when I woke up the next morning the PC was off. I turned it on, wondering if there'd been a power cut or something, and it came on, but with no BIOS beep, and no video. I took off the side and noticed the CPU_LED was on. All fans/LEDs and graphics card fan powered on, but no signs of life.

So far I think I'v narrowed it down to Mobo or CPU. I tried removing/rearranging RAM/graphics card, tried different PSU, reset CMOS, re-seated CPU twice, etc etc etc. even with no RAM/Cards and a different PSU there's still no beep code.

If it helps, my BIOS setting were 195Mhz x 22 (I think. It may have been 22.5), cool'n quiet off, turbo off, 1.38125 vcore.

Now that I've written the whole scenario out here, the lack of motherboard beep codes strongly implicates a fault with that, doesn't it?

The fact that CoreTemp was reporting such an obviously incorrect idle temp figure might imply that it's load figure is equally inaccurate, which would make it an extremely unhealthy 75*C. I feel like a huge moron for not exploring this more when I had the chance.

Any help is muchly, muchly appreciated as I really want this thing back up and running as soon as possible.

Thanks all!

Jake.

Your motherboard seems like it would be strong enough to handle that overclock, but you may have had a certain voltage way too high. Thought about putting a Sempron AM3 in it so u can rule out that it is in fact the board?

My last suggestion is to take everything out of the case and reinstall it again using a stock cooler.Sometimes weird grounding issues occur and a re-seat can get it going again.

CPU's are extremely tough, unless you use alot of voltage or damage them physically. The motherboard is likely bad.

Thanks for the replies! I think buying a cheap AM3 sempron is my best bet unless i can find someone with similar hardware to help test. Yesterday I checked reviews of my power supply, and found 2 separate accounts of (dramatic) failure after 3 months. It would seem that's the culprit. The plan now, I guess, is new PSU, test mobo with cheap sempron/athlon, then replace board/CPU as appropriate. Also, I suppose there's a chance something else was damaged when it failed too, so graphics card/ram probably need testing too. This might end up taking a while as I'm still in school and have no real income, but at least I've sourced the issue.

I tried removing all components/reinstalling shortly after posting. Didn't help tongue.gif

Lessons learned: Do NOT buy cheap PSUs! mad.gif

It should be 200 x 21.5 not 195Mhz x 22. Your CPU will have problems running at 195.

My bet would be motherboard, although it could be both.Do you have a friend with a AM3+ mobo?
Oh and don't worry about low CoreTemp readings, completely normal. The sensors do not read correctly until around 26c.

Also did you try a different SATA port for your HDD?

Yes, thanks for pointing this out. I realised this shortly after posting, but even after a BIOS reset it is not working. This wouldn't have damaged the CPU in any way would it?

Edit: redwoodz, unfortunately not. I think I'll have to purchase a cheap CPU for testing tongue.gif Thanks for reassuring me about temps. That had me worried.

Edit 2: different SATA port? No I didn't, however, I cant see that helping as the problem prevents any video output/beeps/post. These are independent of SATA devices, right?

Running 195 REF won't hurt the board or CPU, but it definitely would cause instability, which would likely require a ton of voltage to stabilize (if at all), and still risk the problem of background HDD corrupted writes.

That said, PSU and case. Two most important pieces of any build imo wink.gif

EDIT: Do you get any beeps when you try booting without the CPU supplemental power cable connected? (ATX/EPS12)

..cuz umm..I've been there ninja.gif ..pm me 1st..I'll be on and off today..umm..cpu may not be the problem ninja.gif
In fact..I'm kinda leaning towards mobo atm.

@OP. As well: Core Temp (AMD TCTL) is extremely useless, but then again, so is CPU Temp. You sort of need both numbers to get any "real" estimate on what the chip is running at.
