Let's keep this Windows 8 news thread to Windows 8 please.

I'll be trying out a bunch of old games later this week to see how well they work.  Old games like Diablo, SC: Brood War, Star Siege.

That's really dumb. MP games will be compatible with Win 7 for a long time.

Microsoft would probably release a Service Pack 2 for Windows 7 to add in a lot of those features though like you said people can just avoid the updates altogether.

Thats a good step, so by time everyone is onboard with Win8 we will be much more secure. However, by that time there might be Win10.

Basically if you don't like the UI changes for Windows 8, just install Start 8, it gives you back the old Windows 7 start menu

so you get the leaner, more optimized OS with some new features, and you keep your old UI

Its funny how they say this is a consumer-centric release, go to all kinds of trouble reworking the technical details, yet if I set my theme color too dark on the RTM I can't read anything on the title bars because the font is plain black and can't be changed since that functionality was hacked out to the point where the only way to change by hex editing a .dll.

Secure? With careless oversights like that I'll be surprised if everyone doesn't get hacked with a 0-day exploit.

It means eventually Windows itself will help protect games. In 2050 running Windows 7 just to hack would be completely stupid as Windows 20 will be out by then. The real reason Microsoft did this was to make the OS more secure. It helping keep some games more secure from hackers is just a added bonus.

What a terrible, fairy tale article. Windows 8 will have ASLR, great. That will help with security. It won't end all hacking, either in games or of people's machines. It is a security feature. Yet someone writes an article that claims this feature means Windows 8 is good for gaming?

Of course the first posts you see the cheerleaders who have not even read the article.

Windows 8 desktop/laptop might be ok, time will tell. A Microsoft store bundled in my OS seems pretty shady to me and a possible anti-trust violation. I don't want their store to baked into my OS. I don't want my tablets and phones locked down, with only MS and its partners able to choose which software I load on it and which software I buy on it. Make no mistake, if Microsoft thought for even a minute they could get away with locking down the desktop and laptop version of the OS they'd be all over it.

So don't buy this hype headline. Time will tell how this all shakes out.

The real reason Microsoft probably did this is for the Windows 8 Start Menu games. I'm positive we will see Windows 8 Start Menu MMORPG's and such like Runescape. This will help keep these games and other games safer.

Microsoft didn't include ASLR for ANY reason having to do with games, it was to make the OS more secure.

So are you lining Apple up for an anti trust suit first? I mean they're both doing it. So its not technically a monopoly.

This definitely makes sense. Better to switch to Win 8 and use the old interface if one is not comfortable without a start menu biggrin.gif
